steering cable

1986 v20, what is the steering cable length and what type of connector is on the existing steering wheel.

Not what you want to hear, but the easiest way to determine your question(s) is by measuring what you presently have. As to the connector, I think that depends on what you presently have. :head:

Teleflex usually has a number embossedi in the housing on the end up under the helm that tells the length. Do a search, somebody changed one out not too long ago. I think the length was 17 ft, but i d confirm it. I found it s not much more to change helm also when bought as a kit.

Also recommend NFB if your doing the swap

Just did mine. seastar xtreme nfb kit part # ssx17614 14 ft. Mine is an 87 or 89? outboard. Not much more to get a helm but its a different style. Had to cut a 2 inch by 4 hole under steering wheel so cable would fit. Cant see it much because its on the bottom. Just didn't get around to glassing over it yet. Up at the helm it just feeds in and clicks in a detent, cable looks kinda like it has a spring wrapped around it. That's the easy part. If u have an outboard, that end of cable runs through where it pivots on the boat and it is a solid piece permanently attached to cable. The hole where it goes into the boat isn't straight with the pivot point so u have to cut the hole bigger or remove the outboard and slide solid end of cable in.
And like phat said the cable will have a # on it. mine was in white on the black outer cover of cable.

My boat is a dual console. Most of you guys have cuddy cabins. Not sure of the cable length on those.

17 sounds familiar, the NFB helm is worth it.

I have a 1989 cuddy with an outboard. I replaced my old system last year with a Teleflex NFB (p/n SS14716) which has a 16' cable. The NFB steering head is larger than the old one so it was a pain to install in the console but it was doable without cutting anything. The splashwell had to be cut to swap the cables but the cut was small enough that I was able to cover it by repositioning the rubber booty that the cables pass through. I like the NFB and am glad I swapped out the entire system rather than just replacing the cable on the old system.

I have a existing nfb helm so I didn't have to change it just hooked up the new cable to it and I think it's a 17 foot cable hope that helps

I agree with Bradford on both

After steering cable broke while fishing on the ocean I switched to hydraulic and after a couple years so far no issues.
Was not thrilled to sink the $ into it but that experience was it.
Seems cable a bit more risky with the torque of larger outboards .
