Is a 200 optimax (525lbs) to much for an ‘83’ V20
 

I currently have a 1995 johnson 150hp on my ‘1983’ v20 Fisher (weight 375lbs). I’m looking at replacing it with a 2000 OptiMaxx that weighs 525lbs. Is this going to be to much weight or HP for the boat? I know the boat is rated for 200 or 225hp but this was 30 years ago when motors weighed less. Any help wou be great.

I have a 03 hpdi 250 on v21 should be close to the same weight as the 200 you are considering, my deck drains don't flood the deck unless 2 big adults stand on the same side of the boat.
I do have 2 batteries for my bow mount up in the floor under the cuddy, I think having some weight forward does help.

Difference in old school vs new school HP ratings shouldn't matter much IMO. The 150 lbs can be tested by having your buddy stand next to the motor during a variety of conditions. I would guess that it would be at the limits but mostly
ok.

If it's transom mounted, I would think you'll be fine, but it would be a good idea to move some weight forward like your batteries if you can. Otherwise install some check valves in your deck drains, and call it a day. Myself I would be looking for a 2.5l optimax if it was my money. The 3.0l engines are nice, but the 2.5l will do most everything you need, they're well known to be one of the best engines on fuel, and would save you a few pounds vs the 3.0l.

V20 not sure ...others know, I believe 225 hp
