1981 mercury trim pump/motor

Hello, my trim pump needs oil added to it and well the plug for the fill hole will not come out. The head for the screwwas made of plastic and broke as soon as i put any pressure on it. Hoping there was some metal under the plastic head i tried an easy out and lets just say the whole plug is eaten up and isnt going to come out. Is there any other way to get oil into this reservoir besides the hole designed to take it?

i was just going to buy a new motor/reservoir but i cant seem to find what im looking for. There seems to be 4 different pumps that match the model year and none of them look like what i have. I also cannot find a part number on the one i do have. ive attached some pics of what i have, would any of you happen to know what it is and where i could find a replacement?

thanks in advance

Hi James. A detailed (close up) pic of the plug/hole will help. Trying to assess the damage and if it's possible to put a drill/tap/plug or a drill/heli-coil/plug into it and save the pump. :head:
Thanks

I'll get a close up tomorrow.

What I'm really interested in is finding a replacement before I destroy this one anymore trying to fix it.

snow has prevented me from getting a pic, it should all be melted tomorrow or tuesday and ill get that. I have made some progress in finding a replacement.

here is the link to the replacement dipstick (the thing i have mangled in my current motor)

Here is the closest thing i can find to the motor that is on the boat. Im sure it will function correctly but Im not so sure the mounting bracket i have will work on this motor. Even if it wont i can figure out a way to mount it to the boat so i will pull the motor and start messing with it more. Id much rather buy a 15 dollar plug than a 200 dollar motor.

Is your engine an inline 6 outboard? Also know as a tower of power?

Probably more to it, but in the exploded view, looks like the bowl is held on by one screw,#10. Can u drop the bowl and get to the back of the dipstick.

Was thinking the same thing Phat. From the exploded parts view looks like it should be a fairly simple job to take it apart.. then put a wrench on it and turn out the dipstick from the inside.:head:

sometimes i way over think things and miss the simple explanation.

it does appear i can just drop the bowl and be done with it. will try it tomorrow and report back

Well Phat and Destroyer were correct. One screw to pull the bowl off which gave easy access to the dipstick. Took a whole 30 seconds to get apart, wish I would have payed attention and thought simple way earlier in this process.

The dipstick wouldn't budge turning it from the inside either. It broke off before it started to turn out. But I was able to easily drill it out from the inside. Now I just need to clean the threads up a bit and order a new dipstick.

Thanks for the help guys

James - PM me if you want a set of new hoses for that motor/pump. I think I have some kicking around the garage that are essentially brand new. There are all yours if you want them.
