rod pocket replacement

My rod pockets have seen better days. I have been looking for a replacement for a while. A place in Florida had some nice ones but the shipping was just as much as the product. So I kept an eye on Craigslist. And I scored a nice set only one town away. Only a little short. No big deal. I'll just make a trim ring out of 1/4" Starboard. Here's how they turned out.

Looks Great!! I will have to see how mine are on the new to me V this spring?? They looked ok but who knows

I had repaired mine when I first put the boat together. But over the years they continued to fall apart. Every time I removed them to access wiring it would crack more or a piece would fall off. Not any more.

Very nice retrofit. I like the way you used the starboard as a bezel around the new boxes.

Hey Pete. Do you still have the old ones that you replaced? My 78 doesn't have any (long story) and since I'm going to be offering it up for sale this spring any rod boxes in the holes are better than nothing... and my boat has the same style as your old ones. If available PM me with what you want for them and maybe we can make a deal.

Destroyer,
I still have them. But unfortunately when I removed them I literally threw them out of the boat and they broke up pretty good. If you want them they are yours for free. I also have the teak trim that you can have too. I suppose they are still better than nothing. Let me know if you still want them and I will set them aside for you.

Great!!! I'm a firm believer in fiberglass mat and Gorilla Tape. Lets see if they can live up to their name's. Tell me where and when you'll be available and I'll be there. (One of the advantages of being retired is my time is my own). Thanks Pete.

The parts are at my job in Point Pleasant Beach. Garden State Marina 101 rt35 south. I'm there every day from 7:30 to 5.

What method used to connect the starboard to gunnel ? I don't see screws......
Did you sink screws and fill with compound ?

captpete13 02-17-2016 07:47 PM

I used screws slightly countersunk. I just took the picture before I fastened it into the boat. Actually all of the top and bottom screws for the new rod pockets grabbed fiberglass. I just had to add a few on each end.
