Need some advice on cost of repairs...
 
I have a couple of things that I need done to my v20. My question to all of you is, am I getting a decent price or no?

  1. complete bellos service - $1200 inc parts
  2. complete water pump service - $250 inc parts
  3. trim cylinder repair - $256 inc parts

spareparts would know alot better than me, but the bellows quote sounds awfully high to me. and when you say water pump, is that the engine pump, or the one in the outdrive? if so, the outdrive is already off to do the bellows. and what is wrong with the trim rams? the used set i picked up off ebay for under $100, and they were low hour freshwater units.

Parts cost under $300..... Labor 3-6 hrs

high IMHO

Don't see any mention of trim senders.... Likely need done at the same time.... Also engine alignment should always be checked/adjusted when drive is removed..... Check ujoint and gimbal bearing too

I charge 5 hours($90 per) for a transom plate overhaul( bellows, water tube, gimbal bearing, shift cable, shift cable boot, check alignment, etc.) I add one one hour for replacing he senders while I'm at it(by itself, its a 3 hour job per merc flat rate). Going with oem stuff, you can easily end up with $500 in parts. I'm cheaper than the dealers. Water pump is 2 hours by itself, I'd throw it in for one hour with the job($35-$100 parts depending on what it needs). I don't rebuild trim cylinders, between the salt corrosion(takes a lot of work to get them apart) and the high price of the merc rebuild kits, I just replace them. If you are in fresh water, they may be worth saving. And yes, on a good day I can do it far faster than that, but most will take at least that amount of time, and most charge more

Thank you all - yea, I figured I was definitely over paying. I'm a DIY guy, but here's my situation... it is at a marina in upstate NY, where I'm from, and where I got the boat. I am in South Florida - where I live. This is my first boat and I'm not too familiar with them (although people here are very helpful and I've researched a lot)

Long story short, I wanted to start with a boat that was in perfect running order. So... I figured it was cheaper for me to get it fixed there, as opposed to Fort Lauderdale. Perhaps I was wrong about that... time will tell.

Well, lets think about this.... NY to Fla.... Seems to me that Goose Creek, SC is just about in the middle of that tow. Why not bring it to Spare, let him do the work and save some dough? Plus, you'll know you're getting the job done right the first time.
