voltage regulator burnt

So.. my voltage regulator burnt on my 1984 merc 488. I decided to replace the voltage regulator with a alternator. I bought a kit and have installed it and before I start the motor I want to run it by you guys first.

My motor has a power steering pump on it so I connected the alternator bracket to the block and have a belt running from the stator to the power steering pump and then on to the alternator. There are three wires from the alternator one red, one orange and one black. The red and orange wires connect together and are run to the fuse block on the starter motor. The black wire is connected to the coil. I have disconnected the old voltage regulator ,cut the wires running from the stator and will put marrets with rubber paint to seal the wires running from the stator.

Do you think this set up is correct? I have pictures I can post.

nope
I'd have to put more time into it than I have to get it right but I suspect someone here will chime in soon enough.

I agree, I don't think Smoke is beating you up, he's just direct. LOL

trust me, direct I like and I take all the advice I can get from Smoke. You guys are great here. I don't have a Wellcraft any longer but this site is far more friendly.

So.... I started her up and after about 10 min of coaxing she did start up and purred like a kitten (could this be a choke problem?). It was a concern of mine I might have damaged the motor, over heated it. The volt meter reads between 13 and 14 volts, I think that's right? I have changed the gear oil, water impeller and motor oil. I think I am ready.

that wiring by color sure doesn't sound right to me, what alternator kit did you get? Links?

Breeze Works. It is specifically for my 488

i found their wiring diagram, I don't agree with their color choices, but you appear to have it wired correctly. Make sure you run a dedicated ground wire to the alternator chassis. I don't see where burning up your old regulator would have damaged anything else on your motor. I would check your water pump impeller if you haven't changed it in a while, the regulators are water cooled and a weak impeller can cause them to overheat

I changed the oil and the water impeller along with the coolant. When I changed the gear oil it was black black black, so I suspect it was past due.
