Pirogue build thread Well here is the little pirogue Im building for those that havent seen it on Facebook. As stated before I just wanted something to fool around in some ponds and wanted something light. The main goal here was something durable with as little weight as possible. This isnt a show piece at all so it wont get a whole lot of fairing, sanding and finish work. Started out with a few sheets of cheap luan. Its getting glassed and completely sealed so the wood is just a basis for forming what I need. http://i.imgur.com/XbrigLAl.jpg Started with 11" sides and scarfed them together by routing out 3" on each section: http://i.imgur.com/uZBbhCVl.jpg http://i.imgur.com/lrgevyKl.jpg Let cure overnight. All set with Gorilla glue, its good stuff: http://i.imgur.com/Pw21xqPl.jpg Bow stems cut, several inches too long and a 19 degree angle: http://i.imgur.com/JT306AYl.jpg Ends cut, I went roungly 12.5' overall length: http://i.imgur.com/f2n6oIJl.jpg Bow stems installed: From this point: http://i.imgur.com/MPyFWjxl.jpg To this point: http://i.imgur.com/mDc8skpl.jpg I failed to take more pics of the process. All that was really done is getting measurements and angle and setting up the three ribs to dry overnight. Once dried I installed them with glue and clamped in place with a few brads and screws. Flipped it and skinned the bottom: http://i.imgur.com/4Hcfh1Ll.jpg http://i.imgur.com/ZOyKSM9l.jpg After some cleanup its starting to take shape: http://i.imgur.com/FwjZ7qEl.jpg |

Next was to skim it in thin glass for "waterproofedness" as well as durability. http://i.imgur.com/ZX5Ikhll.jpg http://i.imgur.com/khQKhsBl.jpg http://i.imgur.com/uMDvev8l.jpg Then I flipped it back over to work on the rub rails and typing it all together. Prior to this is was feeling pretty stout (and still extremely light) but this REALLY stiffened things up. http://i.imgur.com/nhJA1Ynl.jpg I had one small section of glass give from the rub rail pressure and clamping but Ill grind it out and fix it. I heard it cracking but kept pulling because I wanted straight. http://i.imgur.com/09Wi69yl.jpg As of yesterday, one side done the other setting: http://i.imgur.com/g6ZbNINl.jpg Hopefully Ill get a little more time this week. More to come. |
