Portsmouth Island, NC Spring 2014 Report

Went to Portsmouth Island with some of the guys from church this week, the weather was not bad, no rain, constant wind but only one day where it sandblasted us. Although the fishing was somewhat slow at times, we caught plenty of fish to feed the six of us each night and I brought home enough to feed my family a nice meal this evening.

On the ferry on the way to the island.

The cabins...each is split into 2 sides with 6 beds, a bathroom with shower, a kitchen, and a table to sit and eat.

Dave caught a short flounder on the second cast of the trip...ended up with a bunch of short flounder during the trip including several that were 14 7/8 inches.

The smallest flounder I have ever seen...was lying on the ground after dumping the throw net.

Great pics! That flounder would be awesome in an aquarium!

Nice fish RB....if that flounder was any smaller the right eye wouldn't have migrated to the left side and you'd never even know it was a flounder! That's an awesome pic of it.

Great pictures Randleman!! Looks like ya'll had a great time. I need to make a trip down there. I heard this morning on the beach channel that the dolphin are biting like crazy in the gulfstream. That's my dream to catch a big ole bull off the back of my boat. We're headed to the beach in a few weeks, maybe I'll get my chance.

I remember seeing that place when we took the ferry from Ocracoke to Cedar Island and wondering what it was. I could tell there were guys fishing out there, just couldn't tell what it was. I had never heard about it before. Pretty cool. Whats it cost to rent a cabin?

The cabins are around $110/night during the spring and fall, they are cheaper during the summer.

They have some octagonal shaped ones that have A/C which are a little more per night but would be well worth it in the summer.

The ferry ride is $75 to $90 round trip depending on the length of your rig. You can buy gas, diesel, and ice on the island at the Ranger Station (it is part of the National Seashore)...everything else you have to take with you.

Jim organizes the whole thing, makes reservations, buys all the food and ice, even bait...at the end of the trip he adds it all up and splits it by the number of guys. This trip was $150 plus my half of Dave's gas.
