sea caterpiller???

so last time we were in the sunshine state my boy found this "thing" that looked like a caterpillar. it was about 2 inches long, kind of thick and undulated back and forth like some kind of . . . . . . . who the hell knows. one guy said it would sting if we touched it. another guy asked if he could have it for his fish tank.
any ideas on what this thing could have been?? I would know it if I saw it again.

the sea cucumbers in our bay look like old rotten potatoes , they move very little, no spines, and are very slimy. greatly enjoyed by 10-14 year old boys who pick them up, squeeze them so they squirt nasty water on each other and anybody in range.
aka piss pickles
