Bottlenose dolphin, AKA flipper. Dolphin aren't the peaceful easy going sea creatures many think. I've seen them do this, kill dozens of mullet and whatever was in the school, and then not even eat them.

Yea it looks like strand feeding but they never came through the school. Ive seen them do this to trout on the mud flats. They will bum-rush them up onto a mud flat and then slide up there and pick off the floppin fish as they try to re-enter the water......pretty cool stuff to watch, unless your trout fishin!!!

I've seen them rush the trout on the shore and go up and eat them, but the same dolphins wouldn't do it with mullet. One of the bays where I used to fish at was loaded with trout and mullet, and you could watch the same school of dolphin attack mullet, trout, snook, and redfish. The sickening part was when they would just bust through them and kill them for fun, and then leave dozens floating dead while they went and did it to the rest of the school.

Yea when they show up I leave......never a good sign.

A girlfriend and I had the livewell pump crap out during a trip to Boca Grande Train Tressel. In order to save her catch I had to put her fish on a stringer. A trout that was near dead and a nice Mangrove Snapper in the 3 lb class. Flipper showed up to take the catch and pull the loop off my stringer. Showed up upside down right under my foot, sneak attack that startled me. Then hung around and posed for pictures right after. Smart feeesh.
I have seen them all the way up in the Homasassa herding mullet in clear water. I have also seen the mud rings they create down in the keys. They slay mullet. I am not sure what was going after the mullet in the video. Maybe blues. They hit the water just like that. Flipper normally can be seen. They normally pluck them out of the air when they have them rounded up too. It is very interesting/entertaining to watch. |
