rod holders
 

I want to put a few 30 degree flush mount rod holders above the side mount rod boxes on a 88 cuddy. It looks like I will have to cut a hole in the top of the boxes, at least it looks that way. It also looks like I wont be able to angle it very far to the side. Any tips from those that have done this?

you won't be able to point them outwards, even 15 degree ones. mount 30 degree rod holders aft of the boxes and consider 0 degree rod holders and use outrodders to troll

Yeah I was thinking that might be the way to go (0 degree) but I have a bunch of new 30 degree stainless holders so will use them. Going to put one in the middle of the transom, one on each side behind the rod boxes and one each further up the gunnel. It's these that I'm having difficulty with. I probably will use rod riggers to troll from these holders. Just don't have the angle not to.

I trimmed the bottom edge of the holders on mine.

One advantage of doing that would be the holders draining into the cockpit instead of under the gunnels. Were you able to angle them out at all by doing that?

All my rod holders are sealed on the bottom. (You can buy rubber pipe ends of the proper size from Home Depot in their plumbing dept. Slide the end on, keep
it in place with a hose clamp). If they fill up I just empty them with a turkey baster. It whole idea is to keep ALL of the water out of the bilge area. Dry = dry foam = lots less weight and eventual rot of stringers. Do the same with all your hatches and rod holders... seal any cracks or holes, replace any hatch gaskets, etc. And when you get home, after the boat is clean, make sure to open your hatches and let the bilge area dry out.

Mine angle straight back 30 degrees. I didn't trim the rod boxes, just the bottom edge of the holders that mount in the top of the gunnels. Didn't take off much, just some off the bottom edge where it was contacting the top of the rod box. My rod holders have black rubber plugs which keep the rain out.

If you are going thru Gunwales sealant is a must on any wood. Wellcrafts were susceptible to wood rot under factory equipped rod holders.
