My new tow rig.

As many of you know (because I'm a crybaby lol) the first part of this year was a little challenging for me... Transmission went out of my truck. Front diff issues in the jeep. Several broken ribs and ripped chest muscles. Also my car (95 bmw 325i vert) got totaled by a teenage girl (nobody was hurt) a week or so before the rib thing.

Well a couple weeks ago I settled with her insurance and a couple days later I picked up a 2001 330i vert. I have a hitch and wiring converter coming and will use it for towing jetski's n such since the dually costs me WAY too much in fuel for light towing duties..... I don't think I'd use it for pulling the V tho.

I LOVE this car!

I thought the 3 series was a chicks car. Like a Miata. M-power aughta pull a V-20, right? LOL! Das auto?

randlemanboater 05-07-2013 08:30 PM

I like it...nothing wrong with pulling watercraft with cars, I used to pull my Bass Tracker with my wifes 93 Grand Am.

And more than once my Dad's 19 ft centerconsole was pulled with my 85 Monte Carlo SS.

randlemanboater 05-07-2013 08:33 PM

Oh...does that car have indepenent rear suspension? If so, take it easy the first tow or two til you get used to it...can feel a bit squirrely.

smokeonthewater 05-07-2013 10:23 PM

I suppose it COULD be a chick's car but it is nothing at all like a miata.... I'm 6'4" and if I move the seat all the way back I can't push the clutch all the way in... I wear a miata like pants 2 sizes too small.

Actually I would have no problem with towing a V behind it if I had the European factory hitch (costs over $1000 to get imported) but this one (much less moneys) bolts through the sheet metal and I don't want to end up tearing the car up from metal fatigue.

Das auto is VW ... BMW is "the ultimate driving machine"
I used to laugh too till I drove one.... I've been hooked ever since.... I've had much faster cars in the past but there's something to be said for a car that makes you giggle a little every time you drive it.:sun:

Yeah it does have independent suspension but as light as I'll be towing I think it'll be fine..
BMW USA rates em to tow 0 lbs but BMW in Europe rates em at @3750 lbs (with trailer brakes) but only 165 lbs tongue weight ( I assume because of the IRS)

Well it looks like I MAY have a combination that could get me floating up 'yonder' if the next raft up comes at a time that I can get free.....

I was trying to get a rise out of you. I figured you would say "chick magnet."

I like your new ride. Inline 6? What is the curb weight?

I liked the old Monte Carlo's for towing. They had a full frame from the 70's and into the late 80's and many models with a v-8. (Although anemic) Most if not all would be giving up HP and MPG to the Beammer. Curb weight was 3800 on my 84 Monte. I suspect the BMW is at least that heavy. Probably a very capable as a tow vehicle if you mind the tounge weight.

If I behave can I go to a raft-up?
