ok, older and lowewr or newer and higher??
so i have a couple trucks in mind. would you guys go with a newer truck with higher mileage or an older one with lower mileage?
i saw a real nice 98 with 100k and i saw a nice 05 with 175k. what would you do?? signed, the guy who will own a truck by next tuesday. |
Well, A lot depends on the condition of the truck and the brand name. But if you have a 2005 w/ 175,000 miles on it that means that the truck has been driven (on average) about 25,000 miles a year. Not uncommon, but it is high milage, and it usually means lots of highway miles, which are easier on a truck than city miles. Do you know the history of the truck?
Does the 98 have a carb or is it injected? How about the electrical system on it? Again, what brand and model? 100K on a 98 meams that it's had an easy life.. (about 14,000 miles per year)... but was it maintained regularly? My worry would be rust or corrosion due to the higher age. Have you tried driving both vehicles? Brakes, lights, horn, heater etc. all work? All things being equal, I think I' d go with the 98... but that's just me and I have a soft spot for 98's since I own a 98 Cherokee. |
destroyer, same truck. i think one is a tahoe and one is a yukon. checked them both pretty good. both clean underneath. both same price range. gonna take 'em both out again on tuesday (my next day off) and make my final decision. got cash in hand and i'm ready to pull the trigger. tired of not having a vehicle.

i would go newer, i believe they went to obd II in 99. at least get something made in this century.

unless there is something wrong with the 05, I think you will like it better, I've got a 99 and a 03, as good as the 99 has been to me, the 03 is that much better
|
I say drive both at LEAST 30 miles slow and fast... gas em hard... the hardest I will ever drive a vehicle is likely the test drive (within reason) and look at both VERY closely
Compare book values and in the end, if they are both valued the same as they are priced, buy the one in the best condition/ drives the best for you.... my bet is the newer one but if it's ragged out and the older one is all around in better shape a 98 is no slouch. The 98 will be a vortec multiport injected engine and they are quite a bit better than the old TBI engines which were still pretty good. |
My main concern for the 98 would be rust, esp the brake lines.

I had a 97 K1500 which was very similar to a 98. I would go with the 05

I have a '96 Yukon. Replaced everything but the gas cap....and I've got the traditional basketball sized rust spot above the passenger's side of the front windsheild. I still like it tho.
