Replacing impeller on 1993 Johnson 175

Is it hard to replace the impeller on a 1993 Johnson 175? Twice at idle, I have gotten a temp alarm. The boat sat for about 6-8 months before I bought it and I'm sure it probably needs to be replaced. I have a P/N 5001593 for just the impeller or 5001595 for the entire water pump kit.

Keeping in mind, I'm a novice boat owner and the only thing I have done ot an outboard engine is drain and replace oil from the lower unit, replace the spark plugs, and a simple fuel gasket. I have however pulled and rebuilt a Chevy 350 from a car by myself, so I am technically inclined.

Also, I don't mind paying someone to do it if it is going to take me hours and be a pain in the @$$.

It might take you an hour to an hour and a half and be a PITA for the first time, but once you're used to it you can do an impeller change in less than a half hour...(assuming you have no problems with frozen bolts) Just make sure that the new impeller is oriented in the same direction as the one you take out. Tilt the engine, remove some bolts, slide the lower unit out, remove the impeller cover, slide the impeller up and off the driveshaft, slide the new impeller down onto the driveshaft, put the cover on, slide the lower unit back into the engine, tighten the bolts and that's it...done.

and when removing the bolts don't forget the and under the trim zinc! everyone forgets or don't know there is one there the first time!
I also use never seize on my bolts when i put back together, this will insure i can get apart the next time easy!
Good luck, its a easy job, O and get a book on that motor if you going to start messing with it.

Good tip.. UNDERLINE IT!!! Use Never-Seez and your bolts will come out easy the next time you change the impeller.

Thanks guys. I was waiting for my local dealer to get the book back in stock. Based on what you all said, I think I will attempt it myself next weekend. Thanks!!
