Sqeaky pivot tube
So i got my new steering cable and helm in and come to find my motor doesnt pivot smoothly. Can only manage to get fresh grease to come out the bottom and not the top where the sqeaking seems to be coming from.
Is there a reason i cant drill and tap a hole for a new zirk fitting towards the top of the tube? |
Rob, I really don''t know from a tech standpoint, but there's no reason I can think of. I'd probably do the same thing.

I'll have to take a pic and post to show where I am thinking. My only concern is I'm not exactly sure whats in there and I wouldnt want to accidentally hit anything with the drill bit or drill into an area that would do me no good.
Its not seized by any sense just stiff....If it could only get some damn grease up there I'm nearly sure it would solve the problem |
a grease nut on end of steering tube, http://www.ebay.com/itm/MARINE-STEER...-/260643554136

(Oh, and BTW...the Steersman nuts are simply fantastic... Put one on and you'll never again have to worry about replacing your steering cable due to a lack of lubrication). |
If you drill and tapped a hole then put in a zerk fitting it seems to me that you still wouldn't get proper grease due to not having a grease groove to distribute the grease, unless the shaft is slightly smaller than the sleeve itself allowing the grease to do its job.
