Bird Population Control
Every year around this time we have a bird nest under the overhang of our front porch...5 chicks this year...and about the time they got all fluffy and could be seen above the edge of the nest, they went missing...so the next day I spot this guy on the beam over the BACK porch door as my wife is going out of it...he had several bulges along his body indicating he had just eaten, so I figure he had Baby Bird ala Chez Reelapeelin...
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y90...n/DSCN1695.jpg I let him hang around over night...cooked on the grill just under him which he didn't seem to mind...although she appreciates the mouse-eating aspect of this guy, wifey a lil freaked out by him still there next day as I had to run down to Charleston over night...so I coaxed him off his perch and found a more suitable place outta sight for him... http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y90...n/IMG_0179.jpg See ya around, Pal...have all the mice ya want!!... |
Good on ya for not killing the harmless fella. Of course those chicks mama and daddy would beg to differ! I love watching the birds and all but it does create quite a mess directly under the nest.
We just had a set in a nest under the deck fledge the other day. Wife comes in and says they flew out of the nest. She was under the impression they would fly back to the nest.....told her I don't think that is how it is supposed to work. :sun: |

Very cool. I seen a similiar pic posted of one hanging down by a hummingbird feeder. Good for keeping him around.
So many mindlessly kill them. I am obviously an exception cause I own/keep a few snakes but many just kill out of ignorant fear. Eastern Diamonback rattlers are close to being put on an endagered list because of this. I use to love to see them as a kid. I live in the same place and havent seen one in years. Sadly |

We had one about that size in the front yard yesterday right by the sidewalk.
Scared the crap out of my wife and girls. I told them I was glad he was around, keep's the mice away. Don't know where he went, but he went on his own. |

Way to go RB... |
Don't condem everyone that kills an innocent snake. I can easily understand why people attack them. It's called fear and ignorance. You guys have to remember that not everyone lives in an area that has snakes. I know what a Copperhead looks like, but evey other snake, to me, is a potential threat since I don't know if it's dangerous or benign. I give them all a wide berth.
