Pompano

had enough of trolling for spanish and went to mexico beach to do a little surf fishing. after about 2 hours of nothing, whiting started biting, caught 6 or 7 and this guy comes along. this is probably the largest one i have ever caught. we will enjoy him tomorrow, along with some black beans & yellow rice.

It might be cold up here but the fish don't have fish with teeth like that:oh:
It does look tasty

phatdaddy 03-18-2012 09:36 PM

it does look like a fang sticking out, actually that is a piece of his lip. they have very small teeth for grinding shellfish.

Oh that's good it looks tasty. At 18" what would that fish weigh?

phatdaddy 03-19-2012 06:42 AM

around 4 lbs. they are cousins to the permit you see in the bahamas and south florida, which get much bigger. pompano are one of the most sought after for the table and are around 10 to 12 dollars a pound. to me though, it just tastes like fish. i prefer flounder & triggerfish.

What a coincidence. I caught a Pompano at the mouth of the Suwannee this weekend. No pics but yours is much larger. Mine was 12" to the fork. My first. We caught sandtrout and whiting out the wazoo but were mostly small. (ended up with a mess to eat) Mom hooked and fought a 5' long salt-water gar all the way to the boat then we had a huge school of black drum move in on us. Must have been spawning because I emptied my box in attempt to hook one to no avail. They hung around for 2 hours. I posted here to "catfish" off your picture, hope you don't mind.
Nice catch.
