Wet foam
 

As some of you may have seen I am doing some modifications to the boat. When I removed the fuel tank cover I found what appeared to be very wet foam. Today I dug out some of the foam and found only the very top of the foam was damp. The foam actually looked great past about 1"-2".

This is right by the fuel tank so I would guess the wettest part would be at the stern. I am debating whether or not to cut an access hole closer to the stern to further investigate the foam.

Does anyone have any experiences with wet or dry foam that could help me make my decision? What are the chances the foam held water on the very top and not the bottom?

I cut away a huge chunk of foam recently on mine...this boat sank in March of 10 and I expected it to be wet...pleasantly surprised to find it DRY all the way thru...Leave the tank cavity open as long as you can, keeping it dry all the time...leave all doors/lids open for maximum air circulation...if it's wet, it'll dry out w/the lid off...put a fan on it for quicker result...I don't think it'll take long...

From everything I have read, the foam resists water intrusion for a long time. It takes years for it to absorb the water and once it does it will do so more easily after it has been dried. I believe the foam near the tank is OK but I am wondering about the foam closer to the stern.

After posting the above response re letting it dry out, I saw the pics you posted in another thread...THAT'S WET!!...much wetter than I thought you were talking about (another advantage of posting pictures)....obviously that much waters gotta go some way or t'other...cut it out if you gotta...
