How can I determine what size motor I have?

Hello folks. I am a noobie here and I have a silly question. How can I tell what the HP is on my boat? My motor cover says 90 but I think it's a 115. As I said, I'm new to this so please don't laugh too hard. LOL

WELCOME!! You should be able to get the model # off the motor then do a search on the internet. What make outboard is it? I know Yamaha # are on the housing that mounts to the boat

Yeah my engine cover says 135 OptiMax, but its a 2.5/200hp Merc:sun:

Thanks for the quick response. It's a Johnson.

90 Johnson, shouldn't be too hard to find out. Post a picture and the CSI team will get on it. There should be a sticker or plate with model and serial number on the clamp as Draglink said. If not take the cover off the engine and look for a welch plug. It is round and looks similar to a freeze plug. It will be on top of the block under the flywheel, I think, near the voltage regulator. It should have the serial number stamped on it. Model numbers look like "90TLERC" 90 hp, T for trim and tilt L for Long 20" shaft E electric start R for right hand rotation and C for Cross flow? Not positive about the last letter designation. Welcome aboard BTW..

That number breaks down to a 94 with tilt and a 20" shaft. The first numbers will be HP, the next 2 letters will be shaft and tilt designations, the next two letters will be for the year, and the last is normally a model designation if it applies.

The year breakdown goes like this. You take the 2 letters for the year and replace them with the number from the chart and you have the year.
I-1
N-2
T-3
R-4
O-5
D-6
U-7
C-8
E-9
S-0

Ok, I found the Serial Number. It's: J4324444T but now I can not find any info on it. Uggggg

Disregard last. I found the model # and it is a 115! Yay me!

Hi Voodoo
Glad you found out your engine size. What kind of boat do you have? :head:

I have a '76 V20 Cuddy with a '76 Johnson 115. My first boat and I love it! She's in unbelievable shape for 35 years old.
