Scallops anyone

So,who's all goin scalloping tomorrow?

THEFERMANATOR 06-24-2011 11:45 AM

I'm gonna hold off until next Friday when the wife is out of school so we can go and not be out in the circus. I'm sure tommorrow will be a nightmare on the water, and I've heard mixed reports about how big the scallops are. Most reports have said there is a few medium sized ones, but most are still pretty small. i plan on going out of Homosassa next week though to see how they are. I tried Chasowitzka last year and there isn't much outside and the river is really shallow. Bayport is another good place to go if you don't want to be out in the masses. head out the channel and go about 2-3 miles north and hop out in 4-9 feet of water(they seem to stay deeper in the south).

Good to know, never been scalloping before we were talkin about goin to chazz but I guess not, gonna try what you said and go out of bayport, but I was thinkin the same thing,i's gonna be a madhouse out there FOR SURE!!!!

Hey ferm are you a hunter.Do you hunt in chassahowitzka too(just wondering).

THEFERMANATOR 06-24-2011 05:56 PM

Not a hunter, got a bum shoulder. I would avoid Chas for launching as it is shallow and tricky, and at low tide you just about have to walk your boat the last mile or so to the ramp as it is only about 8 inches over the rocks.

word up here is they are plentiful, but small. out of 100, 75 smaller than a quarter. this is proof to me the state is more interested in economics than biology. i think they should treat scallops like lobster. 3-4 day mini season around 4th of july and then closed until aug and sept. i also think there should be an $2.00 endorsemnt stamp earmarked for renourishment.

It's smoke and mirrors. They let us have scallops so we won't think about the srewin were getting over gags and snappers.

had not thought about that , ferm. that is an excellent point. i really think the most endangered species is the american sportsman..

Report From Pepperfish

Pepperfish is between Horseshoe and Stienahatchee. FL.

Larger muscle than last year. More plentiful too. First time in the water the three of us had 10 to 20 each. Had 3 gallons in no time. Garlic and butter with a little seasoning. Sweet as can be.
Looks like the scallops could be found just north of Horseshoe channel also as evidenced by the 50 boats there. Water clarity was good. The Suwannee isn't flowing so the water is clear closer to the mouth this year.

Suwannee offshore 18 miles Saturday,(36 ft. deep)Fishing solo, managed to catch and release two short gags. Tablefare of 3 black seabass, 1 nice speck, 2 sandtrout, and a bakers dozen on the gray snapper.LOL.(aka Pink Mouth Grunt) All on a Gulp Bait.
Better fishing was had by neighbors that ventured farther offshore. The Red Snapper bite was strong. Hadn't planned to go offshore, got to the flats and the water was perfect so I could not resist. Now if I just had some numbers...

MacRae's

We're gonna book a weekend at MacRae's in Homosassa July 15-17. My wife, mother-in-law, and 4 yr old wanna scallop and I wanna fish and dive. Does anyone know of this place? It looks like somewhere my wife and ma-in-law can have a good time. Please recommend if you think I should reconsider where we stay.
