rebuild vs New motor

As soon as my F250 Ford Truck is paid off I want to get the motor part of my boat in order.. Are 4 strokes a LOT heavier then 2 strokes..in other words,,,is it best to do a complete rebuild on the old 1987 Fast Strike 2 stroke smokie due to less weight OR ,, or spend the bucks for the purrrr of a 4troke maybe a lot heavier ?? 20 foot vstep Wellcraft,, waiting on your advice as what she will become. Thank you :sly:

The experts will probably want more details, like what motor you have now, what are you considering and what shape is your transom in (very important)...

And yo ulaso gotta ask yourself is the boat worth putting $15K into? Do you plan on keeping it long enough to justify the expense, or would a good rebuild work best. Do you run it enough hours per year to need the extra fuel economy? Since you say FASTSTRIKE it sounds like an OMC, but I didn't think teh FASTSTRIKE came out until 90 when the 60 degree loopers in the 150/175HP came out.

I bought a 4 stroke last year and it was way to heavy for myboat!! Scuppers under water all the time leaving water in back! I just traded it with a buddy for cash and a HDPI 2 stroke, IMO $ strokes on older boats are a no go cause of the weight!

My boat is not a V20 any more its a 23 Sea Ox 225 was 4 stroke at over 600 pounds!! now a 200 HDPI

Rebuilt is NICE If you know the rebuilder!! As what one thinks is a rebuikd others will think something else, What is he rebuilding and is it right??

New is the way to go and for weight and all the other stuff Ibegoing with a new E Tec if I had my choice!

Sorry for lack of info .. Picts of my boat in my gallery. Its a 1978 20' welcraft with a 1987 150 fast strike .. Smokes like a Chimney. I replaced the fuel tank due to holes,, gasline,, fuel filter, tried differant oils.. spark plugs burn black ,, had it tuned up,, I dont trust the motor,, due to its a smoker,,, is it it ready to blow up ? ,, or is it just old and needs run .. It sat a long time before I baught it last year,, i didnt get much time on the water due to repairs, but it seems once I got all the gremlins out it was fairly faithful. Family would like to do some ocean fishing , but im not comfortable with the engine. I will try attaching a pict.

Are you running premix or injection? If premix, what ratio of oil to gas? What is the compression in the cylinders after the engine is warmed up?

I hate to break this to yeah, but that engine you have is probably the most reliable engine EVER built. The 150/175 EAGLE series as they were called are some tough engines that just don't die. If all is right with it you won't find a more reliable engine. Yes they are smoky and noisy, but when they are right the smoke isn't that bad and they run like a scalded dog.

oil is injection .. I did baby it last year due to being a newbie,, Will run in a bit harder this year,,, Thanks for all the info,, always great to get sound advice,, thanks all
