Bloody V20 Deck

Went out with my nephew for some Wahoo and ended up with a small Barracuda. But it was a great day as you can see, very little wind and less than 2'.

I LOVE IT!
(lumber's throwing up about now)

Don't let Lumber see that, he start hyperventilating, never caught a Cuda, I imagine they would fight good but do you eat them puppies?

macojoe 11-28-2010 10:55 AM

Nice!! Us northern guys won't be seeing any action for 6 months now :bat:

Good fight with a nasty attitude and sharp teeth. Some people eat them and I used to when I was a teenager, mostly in Ceviche, but not any more. Although they say that only the big ones have "Ciguatera", in my opinion it's not worth the risk. Yeah, a funny word but it's a neurotoxin which can damage or destroy tissues of the nervous system. It’s the most prevalent marine toxin in the world and it accumulates in the body of fish. There's a rule of thumb here in south Florida that you should throw the fish on the dock and if in a short period of time flies land on it you can eat it. If they don't, it's got ciguatera.

Boss, just tell me when you want to get out of the cold and you're invited to a fishing trip on the V. I think we can fish with about five, so get three more members and we're out. I'm sure we can learn a few things from the master.

Just make sure Lumber is one of them, he will love the blood on the deck! :you:

Nice.

My cousins eat them. I don't bother as there are plenty of other fish to eat. I hear that the toxin builds in your system over time as you never expel it so given that you eat enough fish with small quantities of it, you may eventually have it affect you. This is what I recall from reading about it some years back.
Supposedly some large groupers can have it too. I'm guessing it would be the goliath or something like that?

Cuda?

That looks an awful lot like a very tasty kingfish (king mackeral) and not much like a cuda. check out the finlets running back to a forked tail. cudas have a big square tail. nice catch!

SkunkBoat, I stand corrected. After careful evaluation of the picture, you are absolutely correct! I can't believe I misidentify the fish. I was so pumped to landing a wahoo that I didn't pay close attention, although I am very surprised to have landed a king trolling at about 14-16 knots, a mistake most anglers make. But pictures don't lie.
