Evinrude E185TLCRS parts

I bought my V this month. It has a 1984 Evinrude 185HP on it. It started up at the time of sale. I haven't yet attempted to run it since, as I'd like to clean the fuel system first.
The tilt/trim assembly is missing completely. This is available new for $1000. Any ideas on where to get a used one and whether or not I should replace expensive parts without having any real knowledge of how well the engine runs?
I think by this weekend, I'll get a pony gas tank and try to run the engine on the hose a little. Maybe run some Seafoam through it. Any advice on how to know if the engine is any good?

Welcome to the site, Post pictures of the engine, please don't spend that kind of money on a T&T, post pictures of the mid section, is it 25" or 20"? I can sell you a complete T&T I loaded with parts and needs to sell off a few....

you can find a good used tilt/trim section for V6 on ebay for $99 to $150. you need a V6 one though due to pin size without extra work to redo the bushings to V6 sizes. you will have to remove the motor from boat and take one of the sides of the transom mount off to replace unit.

I just found your rebuild and was hoping some of you guys had some advice. After I decarb it, I'll check compression this weekend and report to you guys on that. I'll get some pics up, too. I did create a gallery, but there are no engine pics up yet. I have no experience removing an engine, but we'll get to that later.

Thanks,
Aaron

Just one piece of friendly advice.. when you run your engine on the earmuffs, DO NOT rev it to a high speed.. You can overrev it and do permenant damage to the engine.. keep it at idle or a little above.
and post pics... we love boat porn here...

Here's the engine with the cowling on.

on the reving of the motor on muffs never had an issue from it. you have to listen to the motor and know it's rpm by the noise. you see marina's rev them on muffs when tuning and testing fuel pump and carb issues. now as for the tilt trim while you are replacing it do yourself a favor and replace that rusty tilt tube / steering tube.

some where in these slides you'll see a 225 having the tilt trim replaced due to leak.

Wanted to decarb, so I came up with this contraption to run some seafoam enriched fuel through it (a little heavy on oil, I know). Seemed to work pretty good... the fuel disappeared faster than I would like to have seen, but it ran smooth. I'll check the compression tonight and report back.
