Hello All Just got my new :) 1983 20V
This is a great forum and it helped me buy the boat. It is a CC with a tandem trailer and a seized Suziki DT 150 Paid $750.00 for the package...boat and trailer are in great shape...open the engine and its toast...but knew that going in...Hope you can help me with some questions...how do I find out if it is set for a 20" or a 25" outboard the model number is WELE0955M83 -V20 also seems like the 150hp motor seems to be the choice from reading here but 200-225hps are more available in the used market any suggestions on what to look for and what to stay away from in the used motors...boat will be used for diving max 4 people and 8 tanks and boat camping all near shore off of Ft Lauderdale and the Keys.....Thanks and looking forward to the replys

Hi and welcome to the forums...Congrats on the new boat. Measure from the top of the transom where the engine sits to the bottom keel of the boat. That distance is what your engine is. (I think, and I may be wrong) that all V20's are set for 20" engines, unless there is a jackplate on the transom or unless the transom has been raised.
You're correct, a 150 is the engine of choice for these boats, BUT 200's and 225's are not unheard of. In fact, there are several members here that run them on their boats, including this writer. Get what you can afford. and remember... :thre: We love to see projects...it gives us all ideas, and at the same time we can give advice easier. |
Hello there and welcome aboard. Congrats on the new boat. :thre:
As far as the engine height, it is very easy to measure your transom. What you do is measure from the bottom of the v to the top of the transom where your motor would be. That measurement should be 25" or 20". That would be the size of the motor you'll need. |
Oh chit, we were typing together

On the 20" vs. 25" I believe the earlier hulls were mostly if not all 20" transoms but they did make 25" a little later on, maybe early to mid 80's?
A lot of the 20" transoms have the "notch" in the middle and the 25"s are straight across. Here's the notch on my old boat ('73): http://www.wellcraftv20.com/gallery/...0084.sized.jpg |

For the guys who like pics. I forgot to put this in my last post. |
Looks like a terrific buy for $750, nice trailer, nice bimini. Good luck with it. Glad you found this site. Wealth of knowledge here (not much from me--but that's why I am here)!
