V-20 Outboard HP performance question......
Just getting ready to mount a Johnson 1989 Johnson 140hp VRO to a Gil bracket on my V-20.......I wanted a 175hp but got a good deal on this motor... my v20 is a little heavier than some...4stroke kicker, aluminum hardtop (150lbs)...misc. fishing hardware...however I removed all the I/O crap and the the Gil bracket is aluminum...so I think I will be a couple hundred pounds lighter with this new set up...the weight will also be distributed further aft...what type of performance can I expect from a good running johnson 140ho vro?
Thanks for the Input... Mike |
I'm not sure about the johnson but my merc 135 gets up to 35 mph in calm water. It would probably be a bit faster if my bottom paint wasn't so rough. If high speed isn't you're main priority you'll probably do fine with that set up.

The 140 should do between 30 and 35mph easy.
The hull on these things makes them get on a plane real easy, even loaded, the added horse power just makes them go faster. Not sure if there will be anything different with the bracket. Keep and eye on the VRO, minute it gives you trouble, start mixing the gas. |

Somehow I think they must know something...:head: |
VRO Disconnect.....Fuel mixing question>?
yeah it seems to be running rich anyhow....plugs are pretty oily...I already planned on disconnecting the plug from the vro and mixing fuel etc....
A Question... My Main fuel tank is approx 50 gallons (midship under the deck) will the mixed fuel seperate in the tank or is it ok to mix a big batch>? My kicker is a 4stroke but It runs on a 20 gallon saddle tank. |
It's ok to mix a big batch. Once mixed the fuel/oil mixture will not seperate, even while stored. Follow the proper ratio for your engine. As a precaution, be sure to use Stabil in your fuel, especially if you plan to store your boat for any lenght of time. Personally, I always put it in, it's a small price to pay for the peace of mind.

If you are going to start pre-mixing, get a pre-mix bottle from a marine dealer or Walmart...it makes pre-mixing goof-proof and EASY!...tells you exactly how much oil to add to the amount of gas you just put in the tank...

Another hint... Through trial and error I've learned a spot on my gas gage where, when the needle is at that point I know that I have room in my tank for 35 gallons of gas. I put a small piece of electrical tape cut like an arrow head on my gas gage pointing to that location. When the needle gets to that pointer I know that I've got the room in my tank for 35 gallons. That way I'm always mixing oil for 35 gallons and my ratio is never rich or lean... Anything over that amount that I want to put into the tank I mix outside the main tank it a 5 gal gas tank, then I pour it into the main tank. :head: |
Go ahead and run synthetic oil, too.

all good info!! you will need also to make sure you are propped right!
Depending on what you want. I used a 15 x15 1/4 and gave me great out of the hole with heavy loads, others use a 17 pitch fir more top end, its up tp you, but the Tac will get you a general area and you can twek as you want. most shops will lend you a test prop to try before you buy. and a good shop wil be almost on the money if you supply all info, like weight, horse power, top no top ect...ect... |
