They finally did it!

Yesterday was the first time I had the opportunity to take my boat out for a shakedown run, not having it on the water since November..periodic runs in the driveway not counting, after setting out for a little run and checking all the systems, I noticed that my old loran, that I keep mounted and in operation as a backup was not getting a signal....none........Oh heck what's wrong with it now? Today I started to get into the wiring and start to do diagnostic checks, when I remembered that the Loran system is supposed to be shut down.......
Saves me the time of checking all of the wiring! Checked the internet today...you got it~! NO MORE LORAN! Good thing I have my gps system but I still miss the old familiar things, many times I have been thankful to have the Loran system, just seems like a waste........

:sad::sad: Goodbye to our old friends!

Yup...I think they pulled the plug sometime in February?.....pulled my unit out a couple weeks ago....antenna and all. I think I read that up around the border with Canada you can still get a signal as the Canadians are still mainting there system but wont do much of us any good I guess.

 I liked the idea of two systems working all the time. Redundancy is always a good thing. Shame they shut it down. Just like analog TV I guess..some things should not be messed with. Thank God they cannot take my good ol' Mk I compass away. More than one time it's gotten me home when the electronics failed.

i feel your pain rabbit, i've had the same one on my boats since 82(sitex) and feel naked going out without it. paid $1200 dollars for it and all it does is tell you your present location and micro seconds to your destination. definately old school if you know your gri # and secondary td.s.

That compass was the only tool for navigation I had until I stepped up in 2000 to some bigger boats. I got to show off my dead reckoning skills several times now. Electronics are only as good as the battery running them. Always always look at the compass to see what your heading is when you are running offshore.

Dang, what am I going to do with all these Loran numbers?

Yep, they shut it down in Febuary of this year. I had just bought a nice SI-TEX off of AIRSLOT last year to, but I didn't get many of my numbers changed over:cen::cry:.
