Put new water pump in and nothing
 

I just did my water pump and when I started it: only a trickle of water through the tell-tail hose and only when i reved the engine. When i went back to idle the trickle went down to nothing and i quickly shut the motor off. This time since i'm on cider blocks too far from a gardern hose, i had to use a 35 gallon plastic bin. I could only get the two intake slits under water. I was wondering if this could be the problem: Since a hose has water pressure, it gets up into the engine. Does more of the lower unit have to be submerged in order to allow the impeller to suck up water (maybe air getting into impeller)? Anybody have any clue as to what is going on here before I rip it apart again?

I would try to get more of the lower unit in the water before ripping it apart again. Or get a longer hose and set of muffs.

If it still doesn't work - are you sure you installed the impeller in the right direction? I think you twist it in counter-clockwise on right hand rotation motor....I can't remember exactly....I always look at the impeller I'm removing to make sure I twist the new one back in the right direction. If you do tear back into it I'd make sure the impeller install is correct.

One last thing to check before taking it apart - you need to make sure the pee hole isn't clogged up. I've used a piece of wire to run up through the tell-tell to dislodge sand & unknown deposits before on 2 different motors. One time in particular I had just gotten the new impeller installed and it behaved exactly the way you described. I switched the direction of the impeller and same thing. So I had to tear it down a 3rd time to correct the impeller and come to find out there was a hard sand or salt deposit stuck in the tell-tell.

What kind of motor? Older Mercury's don't pee until they have warmed up, although the water still comes out the exhaust port.

Also the water pickup tube may not be lined up right. On my johnson there is a 2 foot copper tube that runs water up to the power head and mine was doing the same thing then I found out that I had missed the powerhead with the tube. Also, make sure the grommet at the top of the pickup tube doesn't get rolled as you put it in. I use dish soap to make it slide in easier.

I did a replacement impeller on a Yamaha 80 4-stroke. It went together real smooth but would not pump water. The dealer gave him the wrong impeller, it was the wrong diameter. No wonder it went together so easily. You never know.

When I first installed a WP on my Yamaha, it was pumping great,then went down to a trickle. I pulled the lower unit off ran down to show the Yamaha Tech and he said nothing was wrong. Reinstalled the lower unit, put on the ear muffs turned on the faucet, pumped good and started to loose presure again. Turned out my wife was doing a load of wash in the washing machine.

Hurrah! I fixed the overheat problem. Turns out a missing washer/grommet cut the water pump pressure. Water was getting through and out the tell-tale hole but wasnt getting up through the cooling jackets. Once i put it together with all the washers, it pee'd with like 4x the force and no overheat alarm. It was my first time doing the water pump and I assumed all washers are in the water pump replacement kit. Warning: They are not. When you drop the lower unit take note of the three washer/grommet/plastic cap set-up that makes the connection to the water intake pipe that the water pump will fit into. If this is missing when you re-install the lower unit (with new impeller) you may find that the motor will pee but you then get an overheat alarm after 5 mins of running. The missing parts i'm refering to are #13, 14 and 15 (see below) anyone of these missing and your pump will not get generate the proper pressure to cool the motor.
