Looking at 1976 with Merc Straight 6- I/0
 

Tomorrow I am going to look at a 1976 V20. Boat is equipped with the Mercruiser Straight 6. I believe it is a 3.0 liter motor. What are some areas to look at with this motor? What outdrive is it hooked up to? Also, owner says Outdrive tilts up but won't tilt back down and claims it is a switch as 1 motor operates the tilt both ways.

Any insight or advice would be greatly appreciated. Worth getting started with or should I run from this motor/outdrive?

that was a great motor in its day, but its day has come and gone. Unless its in real good shape, it could easily become a money pit. Have it checked out by a compitent mechanic, that knows Mercruisers, It will be worth the money you spend. there are some of those set ups out there that are in great shape, but there are many more that arn't.

Re; why tilt won't work. Could be a lot of things. Maybe he can bypass the switch to show you the tilt at least works.

Btw,..I hava '77 inline 6 ( 165hp ) I/O I might put up for sale. It has a fairly new motor and the tilt works.
