thermostats

ok heres a stupid question, I have a 150 mercury 1988 outboard and i own it for about 12 years and this is what i would like to know
when you install the thermostats how does the rubber gasget get attach to the thernostat, i know its a stupid qustion but the reason im asking it is because i was just on a web site thats sells them and they showed a picture of it and the rubber gaskit is attached completly differant than the way i always put it on, i always fit the thermostat it the groove that on the gasgit but the pic showed it differant, any pics would be great
thanks

can you show the pic you are looking at? best i remember the gskt has a groove in the inner center and the t-stat pops into it.

the rubber gasket has a grove in it, you put the T stat in the rubber, it fits in like a rubber band around the tstat

thats the way i do it but the pic i saw the rubber gasget slipped up it to the ring, weird
now the gasget is longer on one side, does the longer side face the shorter or longer end of the themostat
