Gas Cap for 87 V20
 

Where can i buy a new gas cap for my 87 V20. I lost it on the bay yesterday. Does anyone have one for sale or know how I can fabricate one? Any help would be appreciated!

I just googled Perko gas cap and, if your fill fitting is a Perko brand, West Marine has a replacement cap for $10.49 and a replacement locking cap for $37.99. There were lots of other google hits for the same thing, but I did not look much.

Lots of different styles out there...can you be more specific as to which one you have?...stainless?...plastic?...

I know when I needed one, I couldn't find the same thread as the original so I ended up having to replace both parts, cap and fill hole.

AJC...I liked your idea of replacing hose and cap assembly you mentioned in Classifieds...just be sure the new one is grounded to the tank so that a static discharge doesn't light yer @$$ up at the gas-dock...

on the old 75 i owned it had the screw on type, I had brass pipe screw on ends I think 1 1/2 worked perfect

My 85 had a POS pot metal filler neck that cracked, replaced it with a stainless one. Something to consider if you're just replacing the cap.

Dang! I guess I really didn't know how lucky I was whenI almost lost my cap. Here's my story. I gassed up here by my house. I drove about 50 miles to the launch, launched the boat, drove 5 miles twisting and turning down the river to the camp, and unloaded the boat. The next day we were sitting on the porch and I look over and to my horror I see the gas cap missing. I walked over and there it sits in the groove of the rail for the bimini top. Somehow, it managed to ride the whole way bouncing and turning and never jumped out.
I'm thinking about getting a peice of metal rod a little wider than the filler hole and drilling a small hole in the cap and attaching a chain to the cap and rod so that it will just hang there while I'm gassing up.

Sorry for the derail, but when the boat has a plastic belly tank, do you still have to ground the fill and where?

Ever heard the warning about filling a portable plastic tank in the back of a pick-up truck that has a plastic bed-liner in it?...lots of injury and several deaths as a result of the static electricity that combination generates...NEM, I don't know for sure the answer to that specific set up, but I would ground it to be on the safe side...gas FUMES are more combustible then the gas itself by far and while you are putting gas INTO the tank, gas FUMES are being pushed OUT......Murphy's Law works 24/7
