Gel coat
 

I have a question on Gel coat. I'm making a custom electronics box out of plywood and want to gel coat it. Can i spray it on the plywood or i have to use resin and matte? If i have to use resin, which one? Polyester or epoxy? I have polyester gelcoat and Pre val sprayers.

You should be able to gel coat over wood. But I would probably put a layer of glass on it to firm it up. Any flex would cause the gel to flake off. The gel will not work with epoxy resin. So you will have to use polyester or vinylester resin.

in the long run, you will be happier using paint. Use tickened epoxy to seal and fill the wood, sand smooth, prime and paint with a quality paint. You can even roll it out if you use the correct thinner. Check the AWlgrip instrunction manual on line for more information

That's what Nick did on the seat bottom of a fishing chair he fashioned for his boat...was still hard as a rock last time I saw it...

I was thinking of Awlgrip but as a consumer, i don't think i can buy it. I used in the pass the two part Interlux(perfection) with good results. It would be O.K for the electronics box, but for the pulpit i want to make, gelcoat i think is tougher. What you guys think ?

west marine retails awlgrip now. The price of material runs about the same, but you end up with less labor in the paint by not having to block out the finish, and you don't run the risk of sanding thru and having to start all over again.
