Albacore update
The albacore bite is INSANE just now off of my corner of California. *The tuna show up every year but are often 70 to 100 miles off shore. *Every few years they drop in closer. *This is one of those rare magical moments when the stars align to produce near shore fishing and a flat ocean. *2 foot seas predicted for tomorrow with boats today reporting 20+ fish per boat 12 to 20 miles out today. *My mechanic flaked on me again so I'll be heading out at 4:30 in my buddy's boat. *Pictures and stories tomorrow ;D

Re: Albacore update
why you miserable son of a . . . . . . .
our little tunny and bonito come in around august/september and thats no guarantee. gotta run and gun em and they sound at the drop of a hat. however, picture this. twelve pound spinning gear and an eight pound green tuna on a tear. strips a hundred yards off the reel in a matter of seconds and you cant slow him down. sweat dripping in your eyes and hes into the second hundred yards. finally you slow him down a bit and start to regain some line. he rips off a hundred fifty yards and you get back twenty. man i cant wait. |
Re: Albacore update
I typed out a great post and then somehow screwed it up and it was lost... >:(
To make a long story short, the National Weather service lied to us! *We ran out ~25 miles before dropping our lines in. *We had our first small peanut albacore in 10 minutes. *Dean, Todd, Shea and myself went 36 miles out when the water became rough with a bad wind chop. *Lots of fog but no real swell. *Dean's 19' Trophy is NOT a dry ride so as the wind picked up we pulled the plug on the trip and headed for the barn at 10:30 AM with 6 tuna, bled and sitting in an ice slurry. *We stopped in calmer water 5 miles off shore and cut the loins from the fish. *After a lunch of Subway sandwiches, beer and a good BS session we headed into port. *I grilled alabacore on the BBQ tonight. *It was served with Janine's homemade mango/avacado/red bell pepper/cilantro/rice wine vinegar slasa as well as grilled artichokes and sautee'd bok choi from the garden. I love the sight of a bloody deck. http://i149.photobucket.com/albums/s...loodydecks.jpg Shea and an albacore. *I'm not sure whether Shea was craving fresh sashimi or looking for some albacore lovin'. *Either way, the fish looks a little creeped out. http://i149.photobucket.com/albums/s...ad101/Shea.jpg Dinner! *Bad picture but you'll get the idea. http://i149.photobucket.com/albums/s...101/Dinner.jpg |
