crimping small line or braid?
 

Due to my diabetes my hands are shot and I am not really able to tie knots any longer, and if I can mange to do it, it takes forever to do!

So I was thinking of using crimps, but I am not sure I can hold and thread a crimp and if you can use them on small mono or braid?? Most of my rods have braid and I like to use it.

I have used crimps before on mono when making up leaders so I don't see why it wouldn't work on most mono's since crimps come in all sizes.

MJ can you exagerate the knot with big loops to do it or no

It took me a while to get the hang of it, I used a clothes pin to hold one side of a uni to uni till I could get it tight. I ;like using it for flouro to braid, then tie an improved clinch knot for the terminal end of the flouro leader. I've gotten now that I can tie a uni as fast as any of teh other knots I use. I've been trying to use the Worlds fair knot, but have had trouble with the hook eye being large enough for double line

A Palomar knot is about the best I can do now and the big loops help a lot, but on cool days my hands really don't want to work.

I have my daughter snelling my hooks for me, but I still have to tie them on when I get a break. Most that I fish with will tie for me, but I feel like a fool not being able to tie and other times when I have my wife or nephews they don't know how to tie.

I am going to a freinds tomorrow that has the pliers and stuff and see how it is to pick up the crimps and give it a shot.

Excellent idea getting the hooks snelled ahead of time!
I'm just concerned the crimping is gonna be even more aggravation to have to put up with.
One knot my father showed me that has a lot of practicable purposes is the Surgeons Loop (from the sites that spare posted).
It's not an exceptionally strong knot but it is a quick knot that can be tied in rough seas, in the dark or when your hands and/or eyes don't want to cooperate.

I've gone through a few thousand crimps over the years. You can not crimp braid. Way to slick and diameter too small. You can reliably crimp mono down to about 60#, 80# is better. I crimp most everything 80# and up for offshroe work. Inshore I knot most everything under 100#.

I have crimped down to 20# mono reliably. I agree about liking braid as my line of choice. How about a long mono shockleader (10- 15 foot) tied to braid when you have the time or someone can do it for you, and than you can crimp the mono to terminal tackle. This would give you the braid advantage and still allow crimping.

i dont know if this idea would work. You could also adapt it to see fit. we use these big sampo swivels that have the quick snap on then. We crimp them on the end of the wire leader for kings and hoos. then if you want to change out baits just undo the snap and put the new bait on. the beauty part of the set up is that its basically a metal rapala knot, therefore you get more action from the lure. I dont know what kind of fishing you mostly do mj.
