88 Evinrude 150 bogging out... help!
 

I have a 77 V20 with an 88 rude 150. I've recently had some carb work done to clean out all the ports. Engine idles fine, but when I throttle up, it wants to die out.

After it warms up and crawls along for a while at approx 1200 RPMs, it will sometimes break through and run at top speed. Once I back off the throttle, it goes back to wanting to die out when pushed.

Any ideas? What should I check? Fuel Filter?

You might want to check your vent to the fuel tank and make sure that it is not clogged .

Tanks are vented... thats not the problem. Any other ideas?

Not knowing any of the motor's past history will leave it open to a lot of stuff.
Are you sure the timing is correct (the fuel linkage to spark advance ratio), I had (got ) a 70 horse that does that when fully warmed up and am suspicious that this is the problem.
How do the plugs look, is it possible one is fouled or not as clean as it should be?
Coils and plug wires new or at least not cracked? One way to check is to crank it up and scoot it with a garden hose to see if it dies, if not it is probably alright.
Confident the fuel pump is correct in delivery? While we are there what oil system do you have?
Yes it sounds like a fuel restriction or a kinked hose or a clogged filter or a dozen other things.
Carb cleaning is only as good as the "mechanic" doing it, question that portion also.
All in all, a little history will hopefully narrow it down.

Thanks! Good food for thought. I'll check the coils/wires by hitting them with the hose. Plugs are new. As far as oil... I run off 6 gal tanks and mix myself... pain in the butt.

More crap to think about.
Lets assume the fuel pump is up to snuff.
It would be very easy for the tank to be sucked tight, feeding it with 6 gallons at the time.
Up to 22 GALLONS draw per hour are possible with these V6's.
Not to mention the bubble, hose or hose connection being restrictive. Be sure you are feeding all of this with a 3/8" hose and fittings!

from past experiants i would do two things, in this order, change any fuel filters you have and if that doesnt work i would bet the carbs need to be serviced

Does it surge in and out or just totally bog down?
