location of fuel filter/seperator

Being I'm going to get the carbs rebuilt soon I am adding a fuel filter/water separator. Should I put the filter after the primer bulb, before, or does it not matter?

Mine is before the bulb...don't know that it matters or not, that's just where it seemed the right place to be...

quite certain it should go in this order, fuel tank to filter/h2o sep. to primer bulb to motor....and I heard installing the primer bulb close to the motor, and if possible having the bulb hang in a more vertical position, is best.

i like mine before so i can prime my fuel filter after replacing to ensure no air inthe filter to get you later under way. doesn't matter.

mine fuel tank, water sepperator. primer bulb engine

Thanks for the info....of course that order makes it more work as my primer bulb was mounted inside the aft hatch so it now needs to be relocated outside into the splash well...

I am trying not to buy 3 times as many parts that I need for this as I usually do before I get it right....This is what I have and need to do. If anybody cant point me to a source for the parts I need it would be appreciated.

Existing set up.....hose from fuel tank appears to be 5/16" ID x 11/16" od. this went straight into the yamaha primer bulb. out of the bulb the hose changes to 1/4" id (a hair bigger actually) x 7/16" od. from there it went right into the fitting that attached to the engine.

Now I basically need to go from the hose from the tank (5/16" ID) to the Racor fuel separator which has 1/4-18 NPTF threaded connection, out of the racor (another 1/4-18 NPTF) connection to the primer bulb and then to the engine .

I know this is way too much to read but if anyone has recently installed new fuel lines I figured they might have it all sourced out.

if you are going to replace the primer bulb( which is recomended if it has any age on it) use a mercury bulb that has teh yellow fittings on the end(some just have a yellow ring), most primer bulbs are one step above junk right out of the box, teh mercury's seem to work better than most. I see a lot of new boats rigged for Yamaha's and Suzuki's that come with mercury bulbs, even if they don't offer mercury's

I like the bulb before the separator because priming is easier with a new empty filter. The boat building coast guard spec is running below deck fuel line from a permanantly mounted fuel tank to the fuel water sep assy then using regular fuel line and primer bulb after that. If your put the bulb before the sep assy they recommend the new Yamaha f-350 approved bulb that retails for @ $80.00. This may seem like use-less knowledge but I am pretty sure this is the spec. Last I like the BRP primer bulbs for best bang for your buck.
