rod holders
 

anyone got any tips on how they installed the in gunwhale rod holders?
I just picked up a couple of 30degree stainless jobs and before I take a hole saw to it was hoping someone can give me any suggestions, never put these in before.

Measure and mark everything 1st. Then measure again. I turned the new rodholders upside down where I was going to mount them to get a visual of the angle the rods would be. Use the gasket as a template if there is one. I had to cut out a piece inside of the rod box to allow me to install mine. Remove the rod boxes so you can be sure there is nothing to obstruct the holesaw. There were a few things under there on mine. Good Luck.

i always stick a broom handle or a rod if its handy in the holder to get the final positon once I've cut the hole. You can turn them a little each way and it makes a big diffeernce once it gets to the tip of the rod

Also keep in mind, the hull is almost never square and hardware is usually eyeballed to fit in the best looking location.
Don't believe me, take a ruler to any portion of the boat.
Consider if you want any of them to angle slightly out or be straight back, remember to check for room of the angle and boat sides.
Being you got stainless, might as well bolt them in also. Locking nuts are usually a real pain for that installation, lockwashers with nuts and fender washers are a lot easier for one man installations.

thanks guys, part of the problem if you remember this is the only V20 I have ever seen without rod holders in the sides of the cockpit, limited what I can see in there from the stern.
Did you guys just freehand it with a hole saw or did you construct or use some kind of guide? Thats more of what I am worriend about.
Oh and no gaskets on these, will be 4200'ing them

I was thinking that if I used the hole saw I would go slightly oversize and start with drilling a pilot hole at the correct 30 degree angle first.
Also do you use standard type hole saws or do you need a fine tooth type for the glass your cutting?

Freehand and whatever sealant you like (did the neighbors in 5200).
Pilot hole so you don't break off the bit in the hole saw.
Use the same size saw as the rodholder, it will wobble and be larger than the measured size, besides you will waller out the edges to get the best fit.
If you don't already have a holesaw or kit, for only a few holes the cheap ones will work (Harbor Freight, etc), this is actually preferable cause they are sharp and dispensable. Only negetive part of the cheap ones, the throat of the saw is too shallow and you most likely will have to dig out some material in order to complete the hole drilled.

I mounted my ss holders in the gunnels, about a foot in front of the rear hatches. Probably like yours, 30*, flush mounts. Used a 2 1/8" doorknob hole saw on my 18v DeWalt, held it at 30* angle and in I went. A little scary drilling a big hole like that in your boat.....slow and steady, you'll be fine.

willy, dont go oversize. the front screws or bolts wont have enough meat to hold onto.
i just put holders in mine.
what a *****.
wont do that again.
on the other hand, probably alot easier if you screw them in as uposed to bolting.

What are the stock aft rod holder angles on the steplifts? I am looking at replacing the smaller sized plastic ones with larger Stainless ones (bigger rod butts and also the bait table) and don't know what angle they are. Are they 60 degree or 30 degree?
