transom help

its a v20 with a johnson 175 outboard im tring to figure out if i do the nidabond does all the wood need removed about 3in around the sides its al good woodand it s not coming out to good

THEFERMANATOR 05-30-2008 10:09 AM

It is best to get ALL the wood out for any of the transom repairs. It will only be as strong as it's weakest link when your done. And the pourables don't bond to wood very well.

well here we go!!!

Brother, I hate to say it but the last thing I would have done is go in through the hull. Why did you choose that method in lieu of taking out a small section of inner liner? Just curious.

Re

I really thought you will go this way , with the skin removal , what you did i have never seen please see this link I did posted it before ! http://transomrepair.com/SkinRemoval/
I really hope your way is an option also, Good luck let us know how it works out.

jasonh1972 06-11-2008 09:27 AM

Once i got into it i noticed that the inner skin was shot(im prety sure who ever had it before did some patch work inside)I was tring to get the wood of without damaging the iner skin but it was just to soft and i couldnt see sticking new wood to somthing that wouldnt hold i was going to reinforce it from the inside also ill post more pics as i go (hopefully the o/b doesnt fall off!!

Re

You may at this point consider removing the part of the top cap at the transom area this will allow you to "drop" in the new transom, see previous post on this site for pictures. At this point you just need to do it right way. As for securing the new transom don't hesitate to bolt two or more brackets to the stringers this will aid in overall support. Just re-do the transom with ply and glass it all together. This will allow you to really secure it to the boat. The Arjay and seacast was meant for you to pour into the previous skin, since yours is all gone just rebuild it using ply...

mauryc 06-12-2008 12:45 PM

I agree. No pourable now. Traditional layup with coosa or ply is the plan now.

You need to change the title of this thread "Need Transom Help" To "I Really Really Need Transom Help". Thats got to be about the tuffest way to repair the transom. How are you going to conect the stringers to the transom?

macojoe 06-20-2008 04:59 PM

Going to need a pro for that job!! You got a little carried away with the saw!!

You think?

Bygracealone 07-01-2008 05:04 PM

Jason, what does the rest of the boat look like? If it's in good shape, then do what the others have said and use wood and fiberglass. If it's in rough shape in other places, I would consider ditching the hull and finding another one...

Just my two cents...

Stillrunning 07-02-2008 03:43 PM

I thnk we chased him away.

So what have you decided to do with the boat? I checked your link and I would suggest that you change the wording and remove that you have seen them selling for $1,000 because it is less then what your asking. Just an idea.

jasonh1972 07-10-2008 04:01 PM

is the hull worth anything???

bradford 07-10-2008 11:40 PM

Windsheild, sliding hatch, rear storage boxes, floor hatches, bow rail etc. are all worth something to someone if they're in good shape.

msbhammer 07-14-2008 01:01 PM

Janson. Trash that hul. I have a 77 V20 with a new transom already installed. comes with
trailer. thousand bucks takes it. Need cash for my garage !!!
