Gps/Depth Finder Combo

In your guy's opinion Garmin or Lowrance?

chumbucket 04-12-2008 11:53 PM

I like Garmin, but you can't go wrong with either one.

Never used a Garmin but I do have a Lowrance and like it a lot.

There is only one name to be considered!! GARMIN!!!!!!

And don't get a combo unit!! With seprate units you always have one when the other goes, If you get the combo you have nothing when it $hits the bed!

Don't let MJ scare you. Buy a Lowrance combo unit. That being said, either brand is good all depends on your finances and room on the dash. I have a Lowrance combo and like it. Billy Mac

Lowrance

I bought the 28C-HD unit. Very impressed with it. Has NMEA bus that let's you add options for about $60 Bucks. I have the fuel flow and fluid level for gas. Even accepts radar.

I know they are discontinued, but I had a Garmin 178C and it was great. I see them NIB on E-Bay for under $500.00 every so often...

FWIW I've seen quite a few threads regarding LOWRANCE and reliability issues. GARMIN is an EXCELLENT GPS unit, but FURUNO is hands down the best sonar for the average wallet(there is better, but they cost more than most of our boats). I know on the FLORIDA SPORTSMAN forum where things get used year round, LOWRANCE isn't talked of well but GARMIN is highly reccomended for combo units. I haven't ever owned a LOWRANCE, but have a GARMIN and have used alot of FURUNO and SI-TEX. Another thing to keep in mind is that GARMIN also has one of the best customer service departments with excellent warranty turnaround.

I have the Lowrance LMS 334 and have no problems with it. I have never owned a Garmin but have heard good things about them as well. I think you cant go wrong with either but do suggest you go to see them in the store and play with the menus and features of each to see which you prefer. When your on the water and needing to make changes or look up something you need to feel comfortable with the lay out.

Here is a link to Lowrance where you can download a product emulator and play with it on you own computer. http://www.lowrance.com/en/Downloads/Product-Emulators/

Hope you dont get side tracked by the mud slinging of one verses the other. :fight:

Still deciding but leaning towards Garmin now after talking to my neighbors and the $200 rebate. Maybe the 430s

THEFERMANATOR 04-14-2008 10:41 PM

Thinkin of doin some freshwater angling there? I know the 440 has the offshore built in. A friend of mine bought the 440 when it first came out. Works nicely, but I didn't like the small screen for chartplotting and sounder. If your using one or the other it's fine, but both was to much for the screen IMHO. I would personally look at the 530S or 540S if you plan on needing the chartplotter and sounder on the same screen much.
