Bathroom remodel
My son bought a house built in 1955. It's bathroom had pink tile with black trim. I say had because we tore all the tile and wet plaster out except the ceiling. The sub floor is 1 x 6s run diagonally. We are going to use 1/2 inch backerboard and then thinset tile for the floor. My question is this. Should any type of subflooring be put down before the backer board? Thanks Billy Mac
Here is the bathroom before. I'll post the tear out photo tomorrow. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...IMG_0732-1.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...y/P1010001.jpg |
sounds like a nice project billy , If your gonna put down 1/2 inch backer board use thin set under the backer board and use a 1/4 inch knotched trowel
|
oh going over the t&g shoud be fine , I would renail it before hand tho
|
|
LS your reply says to use thinset under the backer board. Why? I hope our project will look as good as yours. Billy Mac
|
putting the thinset under the backer board makes it super strong and it will keep the floor from flexing and causing the grout and or tile from cracking ..
mainly because you are going over 1x material if you were putting down a layer of plywood you could probabaly get away with out it |
we did the same type project last year(we had lime green tile).we had to replace stud's and all flooring including joist. its amazing what a little water leak can if you ignore it for 12 years..... its also amazing you can spend 4 grand in a room that is 4x12.

My house is only 13 years old and the tile in my foyer is cracking all over the place. They laid the tile right over plywood! So, I'm going to redo that too. Oh well, the projects are never ending... |
Very nice work bro! Lookin good!
I HATE tile work...Ive done all my tile myself and can do it well, but I HATE it! lol |
mac what we do for the kids:clap:

Very nice LS but my son is paying for this so it will be the basics. Soaking tub tile in the tub alcove and tile floor. I'm heading over there now I'll post pictures of the floor later tonight. Billy Mac

OK I'm sorry I forgot to take the camera with me. The floor has large gaps between the 1 bys so we're going to put down either 1/4" luan or 1/2' plywood. Then the thinset and then the backer board. Is the thinset used under the backer board the same as the stuff we'll be using for the tile? What should I use the 1/4 ' or 1/2" stuff? Thanks Billy Mac
|
Yep, it's the same stuff you use for laying the tile.
I'd recommend using wonderboard... As for how thick to go on the plywood or wonderboard, that all depends on how high you need to go. Usually 1/4" is all you need, but that's with an existing subfloor in place. That said, I'd wait to hear back from Lumber to know for sure... |
BGA is rite the thickness of the hardie backer and plywood plus the thickness of the tile depends on how high the existing floors are in the house and what your trying to
match up to Are you planning on useing a marble threshold or metal edge or wood transition strip in the door way? |
The rest of the house has hardwood floors 3/4". We are planning on using a marble threshhold. I have not looked into the threshhold yet, give me some ideas please? Thanks Billy Mac
|
the marble threshold is good !!
|
I have not got the experience of the pros on this site but I would recommend skipping the nails on the sub floor and instead use screws before using the thin set on top and then the wonderboard or equivalent.
Good luck Willy |
I thought the same thing, deck screws! What do you guys think, deck screws? Billy Mac
|
For sure deck screws....I use them on ALOT of stuff!
|
|
Listen to Lumber, he knows what he's talking about.
LS, you do nice work and you have a beautiful V. I do nice work too, but my V's a little rough - wanted to get it in the shop last winter and do some spiffing up, but had to work my hinny off getting a house done. This market really stinks. Oh, well, a rough V's a lot better than no V - about time to hit the river. You guys get that bathroom done so you can get back on the water. |
screws, deck screws for sure... :-)
|
if you use the hardee board. they make a special screw, like a large drywall screw. no predrilling, with a counter sinking head.
|
Thanks PD! Billy Mac
|
Whats a hinny ? ? ?
|
Back end. I guess I didn't work it OFF, it's still draggin'.

Not to derail, but I thought it would be OK to show a pic of a bath I built. Note the heated towel rack. Not only did it heat towels, clothes, it also heated the whole room that was 9x14" in -zero degree weather. Tub was 6' and 100 gal.
|
Very nice work you did there! Billy Mac

Last weekend I worked Saturday, so not too much was done on Saturday. Sunday was a good day Bill (my son) took up some of the weaker boards to replace them. Underneath was the shower drain, we replaced it. We also replaced the sink drain which was over 50% plugged. Here are some photos.

No leaks! Billy Mac  |
