Boot Stripe/graphics Removal

Looking for suggestions as to how to best remove striping and chewed up graphics from from 92 V20. Has any one done this?

I know that the gel coat underneath is going to shine like the sun compared to the rest of the hull- have never buffed out the hull before but am game to try if this is something a rookie can do. Any advice here would be appreciated- thanks guys. This forum is awesome!!!!

Heat Gun come right off!! Just make sure you don't burn the boat, move around a lot don't leave in one spot long!!
Once you get started you will be done in no time!

the sign guys aaround here use ovencleaner, spray it on, wait for the vynil to krinkle, then scrape it off with a platic squegee. Seen them do it time and time agian without any harm to the gel. Just go slow, work on small places at a time. and once you've got it clean, spray it off with water before teh oven cleaner drys out

I took off the bootstripe w/ a hair drier....it came off w/ ease. Lightly compounded were stripe used to be and it looks almost as if it was never there.

i removed the stripes and wellcraft stickers on my 1986 CC.

I tried a heat gun and a razor..extremely stubborn, only little peices would come off
at a times.

i went to an automotive paint supplier who sold me a rubber? wheel you attach to a drill.
this easily peeled off all striping. It heats up as you apply a little pressure and wipes the stickers away. i recall it costs $30.

OK- thanks guys. One I get this puppy unwrapped and the weather heats up by 30 degrees will get at it. Launch date is only 2 months away.

stripe removal

I've taken all but the Wellcraft sticker off mine. Brake cleaner works great. It evaporates really fast, so you have to work in small areas at a time, but it doesn't hurt the gel coat, and the stickers can be scrapped off with a razor blade or plastic putty knife. The razor blade helps get more of the sticky stuff faster. You can look a t my pics and see that it really didn't leave too bad-a-streaks on the boat from the old stickers.

acetone and/or laquer thinner worked well for me. nail polish remover works well too.

Stinky_Hooker 03-03-2008 02:00 PM

Skools, nail polish remover IS Acetone...geez, have I taught you NOTHING?:nut:

I stripe cars, boats, and anything else that needed striping. We used a heat gun heating a small area and pulling it off with one hand while keeping it heated with the other. The stripe is old so it maybe be brittle and one of the other methods may work better.

Hey, didn't you use that poly something that you brush on to give you boat that great shine? If so, can you give me/us some feed back as to how it still looks and if it has held up after a year?

randlemanboater 03-05-2008 11:49 AM

You wont be able to pull yourself up by you boot stripes if you take em off.

Yeah, it's held up great. I did the recomended five coats for the first time user, and I am going to do about 2 more in a couple of weeks when I start getting her ready for this season. I keep mine tied starboard side to the dock with two bumpers, and the only place it had any problem was where the bumpers touched the boat. And I don't think it would have been so bad, but we had a couple of blowing days last year that sent .5'-1' little chop waves right up against my boat rocking it all up and down the dock. To sum up, yes I have been thouroghly impressed with the product. I even used it inside the boat on the floors and gunwales. No more chalk!!!!! I'm also painting the 'ole Merc this year too. I'm getting it blacked out and shined up. Should look pretty sweet.

bcmarinamanager 03-16-2008 09:05 AM

Looking good there stink. I've been waiting for the weather to break here so I can get mine shined up again too. I'm gonna re-do my boot strip this year too I think. I probably won't be using it much with gas costing so much and a baby on the way, so I'll take some time and do some work on the ole' girl.
