roof racks

I need a set of roof racks to carry my new purchase( I'm embarrassed to tell what it is now, but wait till i get it fixed up, I'll have pics). I have a 96 Cherokee and I need a set of thule/yakima gutter mount racks. Any one got a set they want to get rid of? Ferm, you got any off that pink Jeep?

chumbucket 02-08-2008 10:27 PM

MJ had a set of gutter mount roof racks. Don't know if he still has them.

Ii did? A mind is a terrible thing to waste! You know its tough when your friends know what you have and you don't! :head:

Sorry I can't point you in a direction for some but here is my opinions of a couple of factory ones I have.

This one is the original factory type that is nothing but trouble.
http://i175.photobucket.com/albums/w.../bennys001.jpg
This one is a heavier factory replacement that has a lot more capablity.
http://i175.photobucket.com/albums/w.../bennys002.jpg
The two side by side.
http://i175.photobucket.com/albums/w.../bennys003.jpg
The bolting mechanics.
http://i175.photobucket.com/albums/w.../bennys005.jpg
http://i175.photobucket.com/albums/w.../bennys004.jpg
Try to find the heavier ones.
Wait a minute let me find the people we get Jeep parts from.

macojoe 02-09-2008 01:46 PM

I was thinking and I sold those that CB was talking about some time ago.
They were gutter mount ladder racks!

See I still got it!! slow sometimes but it is there:nice:

Whatcha git? a kayak?

spareparts 02-11-2008 01:25 PM

yeah, I bought a yak, trying to get it rigged out for fishing, I went yak fishing over the holidays and got hooked, even though we didn't catch anything. I've been shopping them for a while and ended up with a used Scrambler XT. Just got to get the fishing gear on it. Bradford? you fish out of one?

chumbucket 02-11-2008 01:56 PM

Fishing kayak you say? I like fishing from kayaks.:thre:

Nice work CB

chumbucket 02-11-2008 03:02 PM

Thanks Steve. There have been more modifications, but no new pics. It's tucked away for the winter right now.
BTW; I fish this strictly in the salt for those wondering. Very stable and it's a blast when fish tow you around. It's crazy when you're sitting in the middle of a feeding blitz of Stripers or Bluefish and you're right down there at water level with them slapping the sides of the hull. Very relaxing on calm early mornings or evenings throwing topwater lures.:nice:

nipper 02-11-2008 03:10 PM

Chum, what do you do with the fish when you catch a keeper?

chumbucket 02-11-2008 03:12 PM

Right in your lap silly. :you:

I will usually stuff it in the forward hatch or tie onto a stringer a leave it in the water.

lumberslinger178 02-11-2008 03:27 PM

THEFERMANATOR 02-11-2008 03:31 PM

Down here thepedal powered KAYAK's have become fairly popular on the flats. Wouldn't work to well for my FAT A$$ though.

spareparts 02-11-2008 04:58 PM

Man, ya'll make my kayak look like crap, bet those cost more than I paid for the V. I've got some work cut out for me on this one, got about two or three weeks before the trout bite is back on, spot tails are still skittish right now, won't be long and its time for flounder

Ya'll know any one that got a crate to work on a scrambler, they made the rear compartment about 1" too narrow for a milk crate. I would like to see some more pics of rigged kayaks

Guess its time to start a new thread

Never been on one, but a friend of mine owns a kayak shop--does that count? lol He rents those same models to tourists on Tybee Island. I think they would be cool to use to get into those backwaters where no one else can go.

chumbucket 02-11-2008 06:46 PM

We'll have to have Valiant start a kayaking forum. :sun:
nice little ride splinter.

Spare; I've seen guys make up some legs out of 3/4" PVC pipe to raise the crate up high enough to clear the well. Just use plastic cable ties to connect to the crate.
Go to www.kayakfishingstuff.com lots of pics and ideas. Some write ups to read. It'll keep you busy for quite some time.

tsubaki 02-12-2008 07:47 AM

Got one and enjoy it so much that I bought a canoe.
spare, I can't find any useful info on the racks I've got. All I know is they came from the Jeep dealer.
Like most things, they weren't made by Jeep but a company made them for Chrysler.

randlemanboater 02-12-2008 08:08 AM

Kayacks?????

Have yall lost your minds, thats worse than a blow boat.

spareparts 02-12-2008 08:17 AM

i guess you don't want to here about when I used to race catamaran sailboats do you?

Around here, kayaks are the way to get to the fish no one can get to, I've tried wading the flats, but my shoes end up full of snails and shells, i walk 10 miles, and all I do is see the fish i miss. Randleman, once I get this thing rigged out, come on down here and try, you'll love it. And to not slight the V, I'm trying to figure out how to build a rack to transport the yak on the v to go to places that are to far away from the ramp to paddle

randlemanboater 02-12-2008 02:24 PM

If you don't tell me about racing sail boats, I won't tell you about the canoe leaning against my house.

tsubaki 02-12-2008 03:41 PM

This is what I ended up modifying and making for the canoe.
http://i175.photobucket.com/albums/w...ubaki3/029.jpg
Front tie location with a 1 1/4" reciever.
http://i175.photobucket.com/albums/w...ubaki3/026.jpg
Rear swivel mount and tie location.
http://i175.photobucket.com/albums/w...ubaki3/028.jpg
And the rooftop mount and tie location
http://i175.photobucket.com/albums/w...ubaki3/027.jpg
The mount and tie locations were finished off with trailer "Glide Slicks" to not rattle and wear so much on the canoe.
Yes it'll work for the ka-yuck in a pinch.
One day when I actually use it I'll post pictures of the canoe on it.

spareparts 02-12-2008 03:48 PM

that looks pretty good, I will have to keep an eye out for a set of racks like those, they look like Yakima factroy rail set ups. that stuff is expensive new

tsubaki 02-12-2008 04:21 PM

Oh and the worthless creature that is only used during duck hunting season.
