steering

when i dont use my boat for about a month the steering gets stuck and you have to disconect the motor arm and turn the metal rod with a screw driver to loosen it does any one else have that problem and if you know how to cure it from happening again
thanks

Re: steering

your going to have to remove the sterring cable and clean the tube with some wd40 and a wire brush!!

If you don't do it now it will be solid in the spring!!!! And you will be even less a happy person!!

I know that on some or most V20 you have to remove the motor (at least in part) to get the cable out the tube *>:(

After you get it out its up to you to decide if it is time for a new cable while you have it out??

But clean all!! then get your self a Grease nut for the other end so you can grease it from time to time. They even have a oil set up for the cable to help with the rust.

Here is one item:

I cant find the other one right now, but all it is, is a steering nut with a grease fitting on it so you can add grease to the cable.
Almost like the one in the picture for the oil system.

eaither way try to store the boat all the time with the wheel turned so the cable is all the way in the tube, this will keep it dry from the weather.

I am lucky anough to have a full transom with a bracket and I remove mine every fall and clean the tube abd arm, bag it and reinstall in the spring.

On mine,83, I take out the rod box and this lets the cable bend enough to get the rod out of the steering tube. Then i take a gun barrel cleaning brush, put it on a cordless drill and give it a good cleaning. a better solution is to use the boat more often. good luck.

It has been a rough fall. My favorite time of year is sept, oct, but with what you mentioned and red tide, this has not been as much fun. After labor day, you can have the bay and island pretty much to yourself. It's sad to see dead fish floating everywhere and none are biting.

Re: steering

We had red tide pretty bad this year. Started late and stayed with us even now. Don't know if the hurricanes kept it here or not. At least now its just dead fish, for the last month you could hardly breath when you were in the thick of it. Natures way of fertilizing the shoreline. RAP, I'm a true local, born here, and it was perfect up until about 4 years ago,now its gone development crazy. I do know at one time Bay County (Panama City) Fl had the highest per capita (sp?) of boats to household in Florida. I do my part , at one time i had 5, now down to 2.

Re: steering

Hey RAP, do you remember the cable length for your nfb system? I'm either going to install a NFB or bite the bullet and install hydraulic. Thanks in advance for your help.

Re: steering

Seacrets, I don't remember the length, but usin' the standard measuring technique got the right one for me...measure from center of transom to gunwale; from center of helm to gunwale, then length down gunwale from helm to transom...if it measures a 1/2' order up (16 1/2' get a 17'er)... ;)...

Hydraulic steerin' one of these days, but my next toy's gonna be TABS!!... ;D...
