Whats The Trick
For all those bottom painters out there. So whats the trick to finding your waterline mark when applying bottom. While at the boat yard yesturday, a few boaters were saying how I should "still" bottom paint my hull and paint all the way up to the pin striping. But the water line doeasnt go as high as the pin striping. If I did bottom paint he, I would prefer to have the hull anti-foul paint right at the water. So there's gotta be a way to figure out your water line and also get a straight even line. Will I be the only guy out the trying to Chaulk a line evenly all the way around my boat ??? ;D ;D

Re: Whats The Trick
Hammer...is your boat gonna spend a lotta time(stored) in the water, tied at a dock...or will it spend most time on trailer??...if most time on trailer, there's really no reason to bottom paint, unless I'm missin' something... ;)...

Re: Whats The Trick
I can just see you in the boat at the slip hanging over the sides drawing a line! Then he gets it out and "what a minute...its higher now." ;D

Re: Whats The Trick
Reel, boat will be on the trailer most of te time. What I want to do is dewax te entire hull, do all the repairs, add a coat of Interlux Interprotect 2001E and repaint the hull white.
Being a bit pressured to just paint the hull with antifoul. I guess you can apply it in lower temps, then waiting for warmer temps to paint. Think I'm against the clock here. Te boat was lifted off the trailer and placed on 3ft. jacks. This was all done will no charge involved, but the owner doesnt want the boat sitting in his boat yard forever either for free. I could simply do the hull repairs and spot paint, but figured this was the best time to knock out all of the hull work since she is on jack stands. Lord....or Stinky, please send me some warm weather !! |
Re: Whats The Trick
is your boat bottom coated currently? if not don't bottom coat it. That stuff's good for 24/25 ft boats and up due to they stay in the water more usually. This is your boat right?
Don't bottom coat that boat it's a Virgin Hull!!! http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f1...r/DSC01702.jpg http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f1...r/DSC01703.jpg |
Re: Whats The Trick
If I had a Naked bottom like your boat I would NEVER NEVER paint it!!!
That is like painting it pink or something! If it is going to stay on a trailer or rack system you don't want it or need it!! My boat has 20 coats of crap on it and I am not ready to deal with the striping of it. But when I do get it done it will stay white! We have had this talk here before, there is a paint you can put on there that will look great and will last like iron, Do a search on bottom paint here I am sure you will find it. But unless you keeping the boat in the water 24/7 don't get pushed into something!! |
Re: Whats The Trick
DON'T DO IT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :o :o :o
|
Re: Whats The Trick
I second (or third) that! Don't do it! I have a friend that keeps his on the trailer. First thing he did was bottom paint his virgin hull. Then he was trying to figure out how to get water line stains off the side of the hull just above the water line. Some guy online said, "muriatic acid should take it right off". Well, he was right, but it also took off his new bottom paint :o

78 and sunny today, I actually broke a sweat while working outside on the tractor. ::) Sure, be jealous now, but in July and August when it is 98 with 100% humidity I will be begging yall for relief from this preasure cooker called Mobile!!! :o |
Re: Whats The Trick
Because I have access to an inexpensive slip ($210.00 / year), a free ramp, and a trailer, I keep my boat in the water most weekends from May to Nov. and during the week the boat usually stays on the trailer. My boat has never been painted, and I plan to keep it that way. Paint is just extra work. Don't do it just cause you can. Only do it if you have to.

Re: Whats The Trick
Rick, where are you? Because around here 6 months would get you some serious growth.
|
Re: Whats The Trick
So, would it be wise to use muriatic acid to strip bottom paint? My V has bottom paint and I plan on removing it when I get the time.
My 84 Wellcraft 248 was a virgin hull. I wish I had never put that stuff on her. She looks so much better without out and it turned out that even though I had a slip, because of motor replacements, she was on a trailer most of the time anyway :'( |
Re: Whats The Trick
If you keep the boat in the water paint if not don't. Mine is virgin. I only wax it. Just like MJ. Bill Mc

Re: Whats The Trick
HAMMER...PLEASE DON'T paint that hull...there's NO USE IN IT...you're spendin' $$$ you don't have to, settin' up a maintenance issue you don't have to...SLOWIN' your top-end down...people paint their hulls because they spend most or all the time in the water and THEY HAVE TO DO IT!!...You DON'T have to....Dodge this bullet... ;)...

Re: Whats The Trick
Yeah, I dont want to paint the hull with anti-foul either. Its a big thing here I guess with all the other boats in the boat yard. Just wanna do all the hull repairs sealer her and then repaint the hull white. Thats if the weather warms up. Running against the clock here with the boat yard, Boat was lifted and stacked for free. Thinking I might be able to keep the boat at the yard for 3-weeks then it will start costing me.
Here is the boat on jacks now. Plenty of room to work on the dings, scrapes and two gouges. http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f1...r/DSC01705.jpg |

Re: Whats The Trick
Hey Pipe...... I'm in Annapolis, MD. The boat is in the water on most but not all weekends. 6 months straight in the water and I would be sorry in didn't paint. Actually about 2 weeks would be to long.
|
Re: Whats The Trick
Hey Rick, you're absolutely right. I'm just a couple of minutes from Annapolis in Riva off the South River. Out here, two weeks would be too long to go w/o paint.

I would rather shave my private area with a dull putty knife than paint the bottom of that rig!
|
Re: Whats The Trick
As much as I dont like gelcoating, for the small repair you have I would just fix the small damaged areas and spot roll them with gelcoat tinted to match. This is for sure the best and quickest fix!

Re: Whats The Trick
I would do nothing and go fishing!

Re: Whats The Trick
I agree!!! GO FISH!! ;D

Re: Whats The Trick
Was told to sand the entire hull with 80 grit along with dewaxing. Then fix the gouges. Once that is done, Iam to paint on a coat of Interkux 2000E barrier coat that will stop any water absorption. Once that is done, I want to simply get some hull paint and paint her white, but everyone says to put antifoul paint on.
Earier to put on in colder weather ??? or does it hide imperfections.. Hopefully it will be painted white "the Hull". Was also told that a simple coat of Marine-Tex Mighty will do fine for the gouges in the hull. ?? yes, no ?? I figured some good old fiberglass resin for the auto store will do, but hear things that it wont flex with the hull. ?? Ok, off to check out a 1985 sea lion dual axel trailer with new springs, fenders, wiring, lights, tires and spare, along with power winch for a thousand bucks. Is this a good deal ?? will take photos !! : ) And yes, I got my money back from the guy who sold me th etrailer with no title. Just got home from a trip to Jersey. Things might be looking better for me now. ;D |
Re: Whats The Trick
Unless its in a wet slip I would not paint it. Mine was already painted with what was probably a tar brush and I had to do something so I got off as much of the old ugly faded anti foul as I could and put a couple of coats of nice dark gray porch paint on the bottom and a red stripe over it which looks good and covered well. Its your boat and you will do what you want but why bottom paint a trailer boat? I think they look a lot better with out it. Frank

Re: Whats The Trick
why are you painting it at all? the hull looks good just patch the gelcoat and be done with it
|
Re: Whats The Trick
School,
Figured since the boat was on jscks to go ahead and hit all the nicks and cranny's, but may be on a trailer sooner. Damm weather wont warm up. Ohh, the room is spinning, wifey took me out to the bar. Ahh, I'll be feeling it in the morning. |
