Oil and prop.

Was down at the boat yard working on the deck, getting her ready for prime and paint. Noticed an oil leak on the lower unit. Looked like some oil was lealing out from the prop. Quick fix with a seal somewhere I guess. ????

Yes you will need a puller to pull the prop shaft housing. There two seals there, one to keep water out and one to keep oil in, Chage all while your at it, replace all lower unit oil and new gaskets on the oil fill screws also and you will be good to go!!

Hammer is it lower unit oil or thicker black looking crud, the reason I ask is I have the thick looking crap drip out after I run the engine on the hose. I thought it was a leak and my friend told me that it wasn't, it was from the exhaust, combustion by products

Re: Oil and prop.

Willy,
Had the lower unit serviced when I winterized the engine back in Jan. Havent run the motor since.
Looks like a black oil. Small amount, but enough to catch my eye. Need to pull the receipt, thought they seals were already replaced when serviced.

Thats what mine looked like, like old used motor oil with an occasional lumpyness too it. I was told it was not my lower unit oil and it does not look like lower unit oil. Check your receipts. If they changed the oil which they would of had to do when they did the seals . Lower unit oil is generally greenish, light blackish or some commercial cheap stuff is actually white and will scare the pants off of you when you first see it. My engine is a Johnson 115 and after it sits awhile after running it seeps a blackish stuff and it is definetly not the white stuff I had in the lower unit when I bought the boat or the Johnson stuff I put in afterwards (greenish). I also noticed that it will seep lightly after a change in weather, humidity and tempature.
See what the guys who know a lot more than me say here but I would bet your looking at exhaust crud seeping out.

Hammer, most 2-strokers will pass some "unburned" oil from the prop...generally they'll do it most when they've been run at idle (like on a hose)...if it's burnt-black lookin', you got nothin' to worry about... ;) :D...

Yes I bet thats Fogging oil runing down the leg!!

Wash it off and start the engin to burn off the oil and it should be fine!!
Might have to wash a couple of times?

If not see my first post!

Mine seems to do it even when I've had the boat out and run hard. Could that be a sign of to rich a mixture, just wondering, cause I've seen it do it 5 or 6 times

Re: Oil and prop.

Yes I get it from time to time. Yamaha injection is dufferent from the rest in that the gas and oil never mix.
The oil is injected right in to the cylinders.

But I forgot all about it, till someone else mention it. I get it when the oil injection messed up, and it was rich, and I also get it alot when I fog the system for the winter.

right after the first run of the year its all cleaned up and good to go.
