Just finished installation of new rub rail

Hey everyone

I just finished my latest project. I pulled the old rub rail and repainted the cap and then installed a new rub rail that wasn't so tall. I think it's looking quite sharp for a 30 year old boat even if I do say so myself!

I am helping a buddy fix up a old Whaler, he just bought a new rub rail.

How did you get the rail to bend around the boat?? We are going to use a heat gun.

Any tricks you can share??

I always lay the rub rail out in the sun on a superhot day and then start to install after the rubrail gets hot. it goes on easier i've found.

As a matter of fact I didn't even need to use a heat gun on the corners since its hotter than piss in Virgina right now. I think the small size of the rub rail made it much easier to work with as well. You will need a extra set of hands to stretch out the rub rail while you install to keep it nice and tight though.

Sweet looking rub rail. Need to do mine someday. Dtupid question: You replaced the black rubber along with the red center or did you just add in th ered. The red looks sharp. What did it cost.
I noticed a few gaps where the rub rail had pulled away from the boat. I guess I just need longer screws to pull it back in ?

Msbhammer:

The black part is the rub rail into which the red part ( called the insert) is press into. Since I'm a cheap SOB by nature, the red insert is actually a 1/2 outside diameter red rubber hose I purchased from US Plastics for .59 a foot, so it ended up much cheaper than the colored inserts available from TACO and others. Actually I got a great deal on the rub rail to from Short's Marine for 15.99 for 50 feet (they have since sold out!)

Kamakazi, you have now been declared MJ's hero (and mine too *;)) for getting something awesome done so cheap that no one would ever believe it. *Congrats on some nice work there!

Amazing what a nice looking rub-rail can do to a boat. It is the finishing touch in my opinion.

Last year when I re-installed mine, I attached the middle of the rail to the bow first (that's what you're sposed to do anyway)...then kept tension on the ends w/ 2 ratchet-straps hooked to a wall behind the boat...made a one-person job of it...used a heat-gun on the turns, but careful, cause it would be REAL EASY to overheat the rubber...it doesn't take much...the old insert rope had gotten pretty nasty, so I found some new rope I liked to replace it...

Nice work Kamikaze,

Hey, what sort of paint did you use for painting the cap? Did you spray it? Looks good.

Bygracealone:

Yes, I did spray the cap. I used a cheap, single part urethane called Yacht Enamel by Hawthorne paints. I believe in the area of paint, it's very true what you get what you pay for. I wouldn't recommend it this stuff at all. It's very picky on how much you thin it and takes weeks to harden. Go with Interlux, it’s more expensive but well worth it.
