Broken through hull fitting
Went out today for our first trip on the lake. While at the launch ramp I noticed the bilge pump working overtime. A quick inspection found the port through hull fitting for the deck drain broke and water was rushing in. Pulled the boat out. The through hull plastic fitting cracked and broke in two right on the inside hull surface. The fitting was clearly brittle.
I have a 1986 V20. I will get it fixed this week. Anyone ever had this experience??? |
Re: Broken through hull fitting
Mark,
just after buying my boat I inspected my deck drains as well. As soon as I grab them, they broke. Duh !!, guess I should have done this being buying...right ;D T-H Marine supply is great. They sell only to boat builders, but I called them up and they were great and hooked me right up. Good web site as well for all sorts of drains. If by chance, there is a problem ordering it, I spoke to a women who did all my ordering. Again she was great. Dont forget, its ok for grown men to beg and wine sometimes to get what they want. ;D |
Re: Broken through hull fitting
Not yet, thank God. Lucky it went at the dock :o

Re: Broken through hull fitting
Thankfully, my wife was not there to see all the fuss. The kids already think I'm nuts.

Re: Broken through hull fitting
Cracked a plastic one above the waterline while installing it. Lesson learned: Only bronze goes below the waterline.

Re: Broken through hull fitting
ive got a 84 and my drains are below water level. i noticed just a small leak. ive been meanin to double clamp all connections. whats up with that bronze below waterline... ive got some long arms but reachin down to fool with the connections down in the bottom corner really gives me a pain under my arms.

Re: Broken through hull fitting
Thats why I installed extra hatches along my gunnels. Wanted access in case of problems.

Re: Broken through hull fitting
Bronze is used below the waterline because it is very corrosion resistant, isn't prone to crevice corrosion like stainless, has good impact strength, and may resist marine growth due to copper content (not sure).

Re: Broken through hull fitting
I dont trust any of them. Unless its raining hard or its on the trailer , I plug em with those screw in perko drain plugs..frank

Send Pic. Thanks. |
Re: Broken through hull fitting
Its those little brass and rubber expanding bilge plugs that you get for a couple of bucks. Some are made by tempo and the hole in the bilge is the same size as the hull fitting holes so I plug em up..Frank

Re: Broken through hull fitting
Its piece of mind for me as a friend of mine lost a beautiful little boat a few years back because of a rotten hose and had no insurance .It would be my luck it would happen when I am trying to run an inlet with a tug behind me and ya start taking on more water than the bilge pump can handle..Frank
