OMC HELP SKOOLS
same motor here, 1988 175 Evinrude, it has a werid problem.
When you shut the motor off with the key it will idel down just slighty and not shut off till itys good and ready?? Might take 5 sec or 5 min before it just dies out?? Changed the key switch twice now so thats not it?? Any idea?? Thanks! |
Re: OMC HELP SKOOLS
Ok I will have to see what I can see??
I see the Yellow/Red and I was right there, its the N safty, and I have by passed that for now. And with out typing all that the book says, Key Switch Stop test: If the ohmmeter reads zero check for a defect in the black/yellow wire between the key and 5 wire conector, repair or replace as required. So I guess I will start there? I can't read wire diagrams for crap!! But the ones you posted look great!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Have you ever heard of this problem before?? The motor just runs till it feels like shutting down? Thanks! |
Re: OMC HELP SKOOLS
I better not answer my phone for the next couple days. ::)

Re: OMC HELP SKOOLS
Your ok CB!! Cause its not my motor!! If it was you be here and helping me ;D
I am just trying to get this done so he can take me fishing for the tourament ;) |
Re: OMC HELP SKOOLS
Ok I have traced all the wires and all looks ok??
Skool, do you know what shuts down the motor when you turn the key off?? |
Re: OMC HELP SKOOLS
MJ, I haven't had an OMC for about ten years, but as I recall the motor shuts off by grounding the ignition. Check your ground connections around the control box and anywhere else you've worked.

Re: OMC HELP SKOOLS
Wiring diagrams??... ain't that kinda like cheatin'?? ... ;D ...
|
Re: OMC HELP SKOOLS
Thanks Air!!
This problem has been there along time, long before I got there. I have checked all wires and replaced the key switch. I can't read wires and have no idea about them?? I wish it was just something I could change and it be good? I want him to take me on the boat for the fall run, I said we can just choke it to kill the motor but he wants it done right!! Can't blame him I would to! |
Re: OMC HELP SKOOLS
check with themarinedoctor.com he could prob help ya

Re: OMC HELP SKOOLS
the black/yellow when grounded anywhere should shut off the motor. make sure your gound wire and that your black/yellow are good to the motor. you can take a wire and short the black/yellow to ground on the power head and see if it shuts down correctly. if so look at the wiring cable for issues. you can use a remote starter button like the one here in the pic i made. it works both as a starter button or clip on and use as a kill button.

Re: OMC HELP SKOOLS
so the key switch when shut off grounds the Y/B wire and this cause the motor to shut off. Great!!
Did I say I know nothing about wires!! and I have never been lucky with them! :-[ So I guess this is what I am looking for someplace?? http://syncboard.com/albums/Boat-Tac...x/OMCV6003.jpg |
Re: OMC HELP SKOOLS
that is the safety neutral switch on the V6 shift rod. the yellow /black goes into the brain on the motors.
|
Re: OMC HELP SKOOLS
Brain, you mean under the flywheel?? So I should look up there?
I was looking there today but after the wire harness I did not see the B/Y wire any were?? I am so confused :'( And its not even mine!! Gee what I will do just to beat you guys in the fishing tour!! ;D well I guess this is good practice as I never know what my next motor will be? |
Re: OMC HELP SKOOLS
I got this from the guys on Iboats:
what makes her shut down: the keyswitch connects a kill wire originating from the powerpack(s), black with yellow tracer, to a ground wire, black. The keyswitch has two terminals marked "M" - one with the black and the other with the black/yellow...when the key is off, those two terminals should be connected. The emergency kill switch, which you should have one of, by the way, does the same thing, grounds out the kill wire. Another way to shut it off is to flood it out by pushing the key in to activate the primer. Assuming your new keyswitch is hooked up right, the kill wire must have become disconnected or developed a break inside the insulation somewhere between the powerpacks and the keyswitch. Could be the ground wire I guess, but then it should have no effect on idle speed. I'm guessing by the change in idle speed that one of the packs' wires has got disconnected somehow, so you're shutting off one bank of cylinders but not the other. To find out which one, use an insulated spark plug boot tool to pull a spark plug wire with the engine running and the key off. If the RPMs drop noticeably, then that cylinder is still on. If it doesn't change, then it is off. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- I had the same exact thing with my 200 Evinrude. It turned out to be the exact thing mentioned here. I tracked the yellow and black wires from the power pack and sure enough there was a connection off. Reconnected it and everything is perfect now. ----------------------------------------------------------------- Now if I can figure out what the hell they are talking about?? |
Re: OMC HELP SKOOLS
So each power-pack is wired into the key-switch... :) ...
|
Re: OMC HELP SKOOLS
in the newer OMC they have 1 power pack.
|
Re: OMC HELP SKOOLS
I belive that after looking at mine I have 2 power packs.
But they look solid?? so how can I fix the wire?? I can make sure the grounds are good, but what if its in the power pack?? Does that mean he needs a new power pack?? Do they coast alot of money?? |
Re: OMC HELP SKOOLS
MJ, I've bought a few OMC power-packs...don't recall price bein' too bad and that was thru dealer...you might be able to google up some savings ;) ...
|
Re: OMC HELP SKOOLS
Yea I looked on ebay for him and have found them for $20 mor less, just have to see what ones he needs??
I found one number for sure, but I can tell they are both different so i will have to look at the ones he has. Have to ck wires with a meter first to make asure that they are good first. |
Re: OMC HELP SKOOLS
Ok went out and started motor and with the key off and motor running the left side when you pull the plug wire off starts to run like crap, the right side runs with no difference.
So this means the left power pack is not shutting down Right?? So its the ground, or B/Y wire (I can't find a Y/B wire going in this one )or the power pack itys self?? |
Re: OMC HELP SKOOLS
MJ, the power pack grounds to the block either by it's mount or may have it's own wire. I'd pull that power pack, clean up, and re-mount. Almost bet that fixes ya up.

Re: OMC HELP SKOOLS
Well I am thinking that the Y/B is whats messed up??
Who ever put the packs in (Factory?) put a wire tie so tight that all the wires right close to the pack are bent and look like they might all be broken. But I know this is not the case. But the Y/B looks really messed up!! But I no have a tester to test it, going to have to see if I can find one some were? |
Re: OMC HELP SKOOLS
Good call Air... ;) ...
|
Re: OMC HELP SKOOLS
MJ, are the wires effed close enough to the pack to be on the pack side of the plug/connector? If so you can find a used / inexpensive pack I'd just swap it out.

Re: OMC HELP SKOOLS
well fixed the geround up real nice and thats not the problem.
I am going to try to get a tester tomorrow to see if the wire is good from the key to the motor and then on the motor its self. I saw a pack on ebay the same number as this one for $20 But he wants to make sure thats the problem first. |
Re: OMC HELP SKOOLS
Ok all fixed!!!
It was the left side, there is a rubber conector that has a wire going into a pin, when they are connected they make contact. The wire pulled out the small pin in the rubber, looked like all was ok but it was not! Any way all fixed!! Also fixed his tilt & trim switch, it was broke and all he had was up. Just got him a on off on switch and just mounted it on the dash all fixed! That was a tip from CB!! Thanks Bud!! So tomorrow we wrap things all up and he going to take me out fishing next week so I can wopp some *** in the fishing tour!! Thanks all for your help!! |
Re: OMC HELP SKOOLS
Cool, nice work #135 ;)
|
Re: OMC HELP SKOOLS
Ran it today for a test, went well!
But it had a surgeing problem at first?? at first start and going no wake it was zoom zoom zoom zoom pretty weird?? But after that we oopened it up, went nice, and after a while no more surge? But on the way back thur the no wake zone I hear it a little bit not bad at all?? Any ideas anyone?? |
Re: OMC HELP SKOOLS
Sounds fuel related, low speed side maybe. As you ran some fresh fuel through it it got better right? Best carb cleaner there is, fresh gas.

Re: OMC HELP SKOOLS
Might be?? We going to change the filter tomorrow and top the tank off.
I told him to do plugs and wires also, one wire was messed up?? He got the boat last year and knows nothing about ity!!He has never changed the plugs or anything!! I am giving him a crash coarse on how to fix and how to spend money!! |
