well here she is!

i had a ad on craigslist saying that i was looking to buy a 100-130hp motor...this guy emails me and says..

"I have a '93 Johnson 140 you can have for free if you come get it. It has good compression and runs strong but tends to run hot. It has a 25" standard rotation shaft and include a prop. I used it often on my Chesapeake 22. I put a bigger motor on my Chesapeake so I don't need it now."

well i send him back an email saying hell yea i want it ;D but the soonest i could pick it up was this weekend....i went to harbor freight tool store this morning and got a great deal on a 1 ton engine hoist $109!!...without the net special and 20% coupon its normally like $167 with taxes....anyway..my buddy meets me at the house, i call the guy and he says motor is still sitting there to come on out!..we take off and go..... we get there and using the hoist we make short work of loading it......the guy said it was running with he took it off the boat to repower but that at certain speeds the overheat alarm would go off but if he backed off a bit or went over that speed she ran cool......he said he brought it to a shop and the mechanic said he couldnt find out why it did that...he had lower unit rebuilt and complete water pump changed 1yr ago.

other than alil corrosion on the lower transom brackets she looks to be in great shape..i was really surprised he gave this away..but who am i to question his generosity or motives? ;D he lived in a nice house on the water so i'm guessing he is not gonna miss the motor or the cash....he was just happy to have it off his garage floor :).....oh yea..that hoist paid for itself 10x over today...my back is thanking me!!

here is the model number.. could someone confirm that this is a 93 model for me.. nada leans towards a 94 model at 378lbs!.....J140TXERR...s/n G 03522499

its missing the controls and wiring harness..so i'll be needing to find those..and a lifting eye and jackplate so far...i'll get a compression check on it as soon as i can get it mounted on stand and figure how to do it without a wiring harness.

heres the pics!

Awesome! Looks great! Change the thermostat/s and see what happens.

chumbucket 10-15-2006 12:40 AM

Re: well here she is!

J140TXERR is a 1994 model year.

J=Johnson
140=Hp
T=tilt/trim with electric start
X=25" shaft length

next 2 numbers designate the year. For all OMC's

I=1
N=2
T=3
R=4
O=5
D=6
U=7
C=8
E=9
S=0

So; ER = 1994

Great looking motor what a deal i got one of my 140's the same way except yours looks better outside by a ton. change the northern *t stat covers for southern covers and it will run cooler. that motor is built for the north.

Southern T stat covers with head over flow.

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a46...ed_boat_40.jpg

Northern T Stat covers no over flow or tie lines

http://www.cajunmusicforum.com/galle...0010.sized.jpg

see here the t cover has hoses connecting them and one leaving to the pisser on the motor lower cover

Re: well here she is!

hmm..hopefully that does the trick!...got a few things to do before i get to that part though.... i was just looking at it ..it seems like it was rebuilt before...seems like the powerhead was painted and there is a "020" stamped right above the V4 on the back of it right under that round plug thing.....i pulled the plugs and 3 of them was totally clean....i'm thinking water getting in a steam cleaning them?..the bottom right was black and oilyish...i guess i wont know till i get a comp check done on it....

to do that i need to mount it on my stand ..which i need to modify a bit....then i need a lifting eye...hows much do these run and what is best place to get them?...next once its mounted i got to figure out how to turn it over without a wiring harness/key..any ideas?...what is the best manual for this motor to get me started..cylmers or seloc? eventually i'll get a manf. service manual.

also..i dont see a oil tank, he gave me one but i dont think its for this motor..its too big to fit anywhere on it.....is this a VRO? or is it a mix ya oil and gas type?..i have a full tank of gas that is mixed...hate to throw it out....also kinda like the safety of knowing there is oil in gas.

looks like i might be in for some work with this motor lol but i guess for the price i can afford to put some cash into it and i got all winter to tinker with it.

Skools Out 10-15-2006 02:55 AM

Re: well here she is!

oil tank goes in the boat somewhere and has a hose and wiring to the motor.the lifting eye i made mine out of an old com-a-long, the manual go ahead and buy the factory service manual for it, save money don't buy those other crappy ones. just get an "ER" factory manual. and as the turning over just hook the hot to the starter lug for the hot wire from the relay and the touch the the block where ever with ground she will turn over if the starter is good. it will havefire at that time as well so remove all plugs so it doesn't try to fire up on ya.

Kajun 10-15-2006 04:08 AM

Re: well here she is!

ok i got the oil tank then...i'm thinking i'm just gonna leave it it off for awhile...less to deal with atm...

got a pic of your lifting eye? i can weld(tig) and i got access to welding machines, machine shop and other things so i could prob make it.

i'll buy the factory manual.. ebay?

do ya think i could do a compression check with it laying on ground like it is? i'm dieing to know if this thing has compression lol..especially before i go out and buy all kinds of things for it.....i'll pull all plugs, connect them to plug wire and then ground each one not being tested.

brianct12 10-15-2006 05:47 AM

Re: well here she is!

Compression Test: * I'm no experienced mechanic - *but I dont see why you couldnt test it lying there. * *If she is steady and wont rock over - *go ahead. * Verify the shift mechanism is in neutral, remove the plugs, open up the throttle, and crank her over. * I would see if you could attach some battery leads to the Starter and ground. * If you make/break your battery connection at the starter numerous times ... *the voltage arc starts to eat into the starter lug. *At least that was my experience.
Good Luck - I had an '85 90hp version of that engine which I sold this spring. Motor ran great for 20 years - with not 1 thing ever going wrong.

You did good on getting a Freebee. Good Job ! ;D

TheTinMan 10-15-2006 09:25 AM

Re: well here she is!

Can't you just hang the motor on the transom instead of using a stand?

I also think people rely too much on compression tests. I bought a 90hp v4 Rude, tested the compression and it was fine. Could not get it running smoothly, pulled the heads and one piston spit a ring, piston had 2 rings and 1 was still intact so compression was good. Compression tests are not a guarantee the motor is good...at least in my case :-/

Skools Out 10-15-2006 01:10 PM

Re: well here she is!

yes test it on the ground i check mine when buying in any position. The throttle doesn't matter but spins faster open but test the starter with them closed. should have around 120

reelapeelin 10-15-2006 01:27 PM

Re: well here she is!

I agree comp tests are not conclusive, but as good an indicator as there is w/ out tearin' the motor down...if the comp #s are good, start it up...if that goes well, put it on the boat and run it...heck...it was FREEEEE...ya CAN'T lose much...

...and Kajun...if it were mine, I'd TRASH the VRO and run the mixed gas ya got and keep-on mixin'!! ;) ...that of course is assumin' ya got the right mix in the tank ;) :) ...

Carbs could probably use a good cleanin', too...and maybe some lube on the starter solenoid... ;) ...

Keep the pics comin'...great project...can't believe FREEEEE ::) ;D ;D ;D ...

Didja get a title?

Kajun 10-15-2006 06:40 PM

Re: well here she is!

ok i'll do a comp check as it sits..

yea i dont think the VRO is going back on it..i dont trust them at all....i'll definetly clean or rebuild carbs....lube on the starter solenoid? wheres that at?

no title's needed for motors here in virginia that i know of...

Kajun 10-15-2006 07:10 PM

Re: well here she is!

woohoo!! just did a compression check

120 125
125 125

skools it it normal for that top left one to be alil lower? on forces it normal for one to be alil lower.

i think i'm gonna go to bass pro and buy some marine tex and 5200 so i can get my transom doweled up before it rains this week.....then i'll come back and work on modifying my engine stand to fit this motor.....whew.. wow ..big relief for me in seeing these comp results...

Skools Out 10-15-2006 08:45 PM

Re: well here she is!

she's alive IT'S ALIVE GREA***124;T your are in great shape with those reading. 120 is average. Now we gotta git her kool lol. Hey can ya say Git-R-Done lol. they will fit an engine stand. I have 2 on motor stands 1 is a V4 other a V6. I even run mine on motor stands. What kind of controls are you looking for side mount, binn mount, or thru wall style??

chumbucket 10-15-2006 08:54 PM

Re: well here she is!

He's already got a binnacle control box that'll work. According to the pics posted before, it looks to be a Teleflex universal (mounted backwards btw. ;D)

Kajun 10-15-2006 11:32 PM

Re: well here she is!

git-r-done! ;D...yup i have a teleflex binn control that i'd like to use since its already mounted.. i think i would just need the cables to connect to it.....chum...is it backwards? lol

i'm on hold pretty much till i can get a 1/2" drill bit to drill mount holes in my stand ..i modified the stand tonight it was really wide, like 45"..now its just wide enough to fit this motor...26"...plus re-inforced the mount 2x6's with a 3/4" piece of hardwood luan ..should be strong enough to hold it now.

shopping list for motor is:

1. new or used control cables
2. new wiring harness with key
3.new or used factory manual
4.new or used Jackplate
5. Gauges

which gauges will i need for this motor? i have a speedo, faria tach, and gas/battery gauge, a tilt/trim toggle switch....whats a good tach for this motor?

Skools Out 10-15-2006 11:37 PM

Re: well here she is!

teleflex gauge or OMC the one you have may have a selector on the back by chance??? it may work worth a look. they have the control wiring avail. used at Boat Recyclers in NC look on ebay.

What length cables do you need? I gots cables. ;D

The Teleflex works either way. Usually mounted the other way around though. Doesn't really matter I think.

Kajun 10-16-2006 01:36 AM

Re: well here she is!

yea my tach does have a pole selector on back and its brand new.. i'll call faria and see if it can be used with johnsons.

i need to pull out the force cables so i can get a measurement....i'll try to go do that now....

Kajun 10-16-2006 02:32 AM

Re: well here she is!

ok got them out... my measuring tape is only 16ft...the cables are about 17ft..brand is "Morse"

here are the ends that connect to the binnacle..

here's the engine stand...even after i modified it it still wont let me get close enough to it...but i may be able to get it mounted with 2 people, but i'm trying to get it so i can do everything myself, mount and unmount motors... i might have to modify the front hoist legs so that are alil more spread out.

I have done my alone, but I use a come along or a chain fall.

I don't know hjow high that thig you have goes, but if you mke the stand legs short on the oter side from the motoer that would get you closer? The weight of the motor would be on the long leg side and balance nice.

Just getting over the top?? Or come at it from the side??

Or hang a chain fall or come along in the garage and transfer to it to add to the stand, use the hoist for mounting on to the boat?

They're brand new!!!!!!

macojoe 10-16-2006 04:17 AM

Re: well here she is!

I should have tossed them! LOL

I tryed selling then giving and no one wanted them??

My basement is so full I had no were to keep anymore!

So CB saved them from the grave!

I will teach you to take my stuff and give it away!

Kajun 10-16-2006 05:13 AM

Re: well here she is!

i just went a tried to come in from the other side of it...it didnt do much good....prob is the width of the stand....i'll have no choice but to modify the hoist legs..

i would use my rafters in my garage but it was built in 1942 lol i did it once with a 85hp force and was scared chitless the whole time....lots of creaking lol

i guess i could just mount it on the boat instead of putting it on the stand , kinda wanted it on stand though for awhile till i was able to go through it and make sure it would run before mounting.

here's a better pic of the legs..

What happened to the extendable boom on your motor lift?

reelapeelin 10-16-2006 08:52 AM

Re: well here she is!

Add 4'' blocks between casters and stand....then motor-lift oughtta roll right under from the side ;) ...

That stand looks strangely familiar ::) ... ;D ;D ...

Skools Out 10-16-2006 09:51 AM

Re: well here she is!

you could split the legs or do like i do and pick the stand up to the motor bolt it on and let it all down.

macojoe 10-16-2006 11:39 AM

Re: well here she is!

lifting the stand is a good idea, but then I know think you could di it alone??

Reel has a good Idea, put stand on a pallet the legs will go under the pallet, mount the motr and then lift motor and stand toghter and put down on floor!

Kajun 10-16-2006 02:56 PM

Re: well here she is!

well just talked with my fishing buddy..he owns a canvas shop and has welding machines and stuff..he said bring the stand in to modify it this week...also he is gonna make a motor harness for me....just need to find some thick webbing and some D-rings...and wake up early one day this week lol

the stand it too heavy to pick up and mount...good idea though!

pikfish.. its extended all it can go...

chumbucket 10-16-2006 03:31 PM

I just took a look. Cables are 16' long. One set new. One set used.

Awesome Kajun!! Id like to know what kinda performance you get with it. Ill be watchin this one for sure!!

I heard once that the OMC 140s were big gas hogs....Skools?

CB has a brand new set of 16 cables!! I know this cause I gave them to him!!

santach them up!!

Skools Out 10-16-2006 11:45 PM

Re: well here she is!

actually a 140 is ok on fuel. they are actually a 120 with 200 / 225 intake, reeds, and *225 carbs. You can turn a 120 into a 140 by buying a set of 200 / 225 intakes with reeds and use the upper half then a set of 225 carbs the upper 4 and you are riding high with 140 poneys.

shicks007 10-18-2006 07:58 AM

Re: well here she is!

Kajun,

My 85' 140 hp was pretty decent on fuel I thought. I haven't sold the motor yet *so let me know if you need anything to get yours going.

I think you should buy the whole thing for spare parts, I'll let it go cheap. Good lower unit and everything! ;D

Another thought........If you were to buy my old motor, would you be able to use the intermediate section and lower unit to make it a 20" instead of buying a jack plate? Just a thought, it might not be that simple.

Kajun 10-18-2006 11:34 PM

Re: well here she is!

hmmm....i like that idea...i wonder if its doable...where you located shicks?
