Jig Saw Puzzle AKA Cabin Door
 

This is the start of my attemp to reassemble my cabin door.I found it in pieces under the 2' of leaves in the bottom of my V-20. So far I have cleaned the Teak with Grease Off cleaner and scotch bright and lightly sanded with 100 grit sand paper. The dowel holes were so wallowed out that I'm going to glue in new dowels as you can see in the pics, sand them smooth,and then glue it all back together using screws as the mechanical means of holding it all together. Once all that is done I'm going to refinish the wood and seal it.

Tell me about it. I looked for it and didn't see it ???. When do I search for it at photo bucket or V-20? Im' getting a little POed about this. It should be simple and it's kicking my butt. Now what does that say about me and my computer skills ;D.

I think sometimes things go askew between photobucket and here. I had my own issues last week. Who knows.

2ndchance,

When you glue the door back together, use Titebond III!! Totally waterproof and it doesn't foam all over the place like Gorilla Glue.

I like the Titebond glue myself. We glued something together and we had to take back apart. The wood cracked before the glue failed so we had to start all ove again.

I find that stuff difficult to work with...it does foam all over the place...if somebody wanted to spend the time experimenting w/ it and get that under control, it's probably good stuff...but I don't think it'll have any more holding power than TB III ;) ...

When using gorilla glue, cover the areas you dont want glue to get on with blue painters tape, moisten the wood with a mist of water. I use both and Gorilla Glue is the strongest of the two. If you cant find Titebond III at HD or Lowes, do a google search for woodworking supply stores. If it was me I would be careful about using wood screws to hold it together, find a hardwood dowell a little bigger and glue them in place of the smaller ones. Clamp it together on something flat, just snug, too tight squeezes all the glue out, When you glue the rails and stiles ( thats the fram pieces ) your gluing end grain to the long grain, not much strength. Dowells are gonna be best

...and what ever glue you use, overage will not take stain like adjacent wood, til ya SAND the PI$$ outta it ;) ...

Like I said, cover the areas you dont want coveres in glue with blue painters tape, after about 30 minutes you can peel it off and leave minimal glue residue!

Also, with gorilla glue it can be cleaned up with mineral spirits while still damp. Once dry a sharp chishel will remove any excess. Titebond will not bridge gaps but Gorilla will. Gorilla works well on oiley woods. However, if you think the gorilla or other glues will get on clamps or clamping blocks put wax paper between the clamps or blocks for a no stick surface. Suggest you wearing gloves while using Gorilla. You won't need screws except to attach the hardware.

Jig saw puzzle update. I finally was able to get back to the door project. :) I decided to ues the Gorilla glue due to its expanding properties. I've got both halfs to the point that is in the pictures (if they open). I've got to find *some 1/8" smoked plexiglass because the old stuff is to scratchy. I know of a place in Norfolk that sells all sort of plastics so that is not a problem. After reassembly I am going to find someone with a drill press and set them up for installing 1/4" dowels.

Gotta hand it to ya 2nd chance, more patience then me.
But if you got the time, tools and place to do it. Go for it. Wish I had a garage. All my tools are boxed in the shed.
As far as that smoked glass. Seen a site or maybe E-Bay that was selling some. Think I seen some at West Marine as well.
