Water Pump Replacement '99 Merc 150

Well boys, I got a late start because of rain and it rained on me for a few minutes while working, but it is done.

The key to this job was having a good helper.

http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r...r/101_0102.jpg

That plus being able to phone friends while I was in the yard rasslin that sucker. *(Thanks Lord Skools) *Another mechanic friend helped me by pulling up diagrams on the computer while I was at the motor.

Once I found all the bolts holding on the gearcase (there are 7 in a Merc 150) it slid right off.

http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r...r/101_0107.jpg

The good news was that the old waterpump looked fine.....that is also the bad news, I was hoping it was crap and I would solve my overheat problem. *There were plenty of signs that the motor had sucked up sand.

http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r...r/101_0109.jpg

Putting the motor in forward gear was the trick, it all went back together real smooth.

http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r...r/101_0112.jpg

http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r...r/101_0113.jpg

And the results?

I don't know, it got time for church so I will have to test it out in the morning.

What did the old impellor look like when you removed it from the housing. Did the vanes pop out or stay laid over? The vanes have to spring out to work properly. The pumps don't really wear per say, they more or less lose there elasticity and quit pumping.

The vanes on the old one popped out straight and were pliable, but who knows, maybe it needed replacing.

hey this may sound crazy but was the shaft keeper in the old impeller? i was wondering if they had replaced the pump with new and forgot to install that and maybe the drive shaft was slipping inside the pump impeller? i've seen that happen before should have told you check that too.

It was there, but when I pulled the housing off the impeller stayed inside it so I am not sure if it was in there correctly or not.

You can do it, all you need is a few wrenches and the locations of all the stinking bolts.

Those things can look just fine but if they have any grooving at all it can cause them to fail. I have replaced them thinking I was wasting my time but it ended up solving my problem as did yours. I would throw the part away *if it stoped your over heating why give them to someone who may install it to give them problems. Its always nice when its an easy fix. That Merc pump and set up looks allot like the one on my 1994 150 Johnson.

Way to go RB! I know you probably already know this, but it is wise to replace the impeller every year for salt and every 2 years for fresh water, so I've always heard.

So, didja miss a bolt at first and think it was stuck? I did that my first time. It does help to get all the bolts out before you try to remove it. ;D

You are now the official Wellcraft V20 Mercury impeller subject matter expert. ;) Where are you taking her this weekend?

I am no expert, just lucky and dumb.

Yes, I thought the "hidden" bolt was the one holding the trim tab on, but the hidden bolt is hidden under the trip tab.

It will probably be Monday or Tuesday, the weekend is no good for me.

It looks like the last time out she sucked up a ton of sand, must have wiped out the pump then and that was the end for the last owner!

His loss and your gain!

But I hope all the sand came out cause it was pushed out by the new pump, and there was nothing left in there to hurt the new pump.
Which I am sure is the case cause you cleaned out the lower unit when you changed everything.

You be good to go now!! ;D

That previous owner (With his fake Italian marble countertop install), probably just powered through the sandbars when he hit them instead of trimming up or trying to float off!
